Sulkava [ ˈsulkɑʋɑ ] is a municipality with 2530 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) in eastern Finland . It is located around 40 kilometers southwest of the city of Savonlinna in the Saimaa lake area.
In addition to the parish village of Sulkava, the municipality includes numerous small settlements that are scattered far across the municipality, which is heavily divided by lakes, rivers and the Osers. In the south Sulkava has a share in the island Partalansaari , with 170 square kilometers one of the largest sea islands in Finland. The movement of people and goods by water is of great importance. In summer, the population of Sulkava more than doubles when Finns move into their holiday homes here ( Finnish : Mökkis ), especially from the country's major cities .
A castle hill near the church village was probably fortified as early as the Iron Age and was used for military purposes until the late Middle Ages. The parish of Sulkava has existed since 1630; the eastern part of the parish village Sulkava is the historical center of the settlement and still has some wooden houses from the 18th century. The parish church of the village, a wooden double cross church , was built in 1822 according to plans by Charles Bassi , the free-standing bell tower as early as 1770. Today's parish center in the western part of the church village is dominated by functional buildings from the post-war period.
Sulkava is best known for the annual Sulkavan Suursoudut , one of the world's largest rowing competitions.
