Roger Ruud (born October 1, 1958 in Hurdal ) is a former Norwegian ski jumper .

Career

Ruud, who started for Lensbygda IL , made his international debut at the Junior European Championship in 1975, where he won the bronze medal. He made his debut with the "big ones" at the Four Hills Tournament in 1976/77 , where he was among the top twenty in the first competition in Oberstdorf . After he also achieved good placements in the other jumping competitions, he was able to take 19th place overall at the end of the tour. The following year he did not take part in the tour. In 1979 he was able to celebrate his first podium of his career with second place at the Four Hills Tournament 1978/79 in Innsbruck . However, it was the only front placement of the tour, so that in the end he only reached 31st place overall.

After Ruud made his debut in the ski jumping World Cup , which was held for the first time in Oberstdorf on December 30, 1979 , he was able to win his first World Cup points two competitions later with a seventh place in Innsbruck. After he finished the Four Hills Tournament in 1979/80 in 21st place in the overall ranking, he again managed to gain points in Sapporo with eighth place on the large hill.

At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , which were also classified as the Nordic World Ski Championships, Ruud reached 13th place on the normal hill and sixth on the large hill. Two weeks after the games, he won his first World Cup in St. Moritz . In Gstaad , too , he was again on the podium with second place. After narrowly missing out on the podium in Engelberg as fourth, he achieved further good top 20 placements by the end of the season, which earned him 14th place in the overall World Cup with 82 points.

He started the ski jumping world cup 1980/1981 with a third place in jumping in Oberstdorf. After further good placements in the 1980/81 Four Hills Tournament , he narrowly missed the top three in the overall standings and ended up fourth. After the tour he won in Harrachov and Liberec and reached the podium again in St. Moritz and Gstaad. He was able to confirm his achievements from then on and, taking advantage of the fact that most of the other top jumpers started at the Ski Flying World Championships that weekend, he also won in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc and St. Nizier , where he was 111 on February 28 .0 meters on the Dauphine set a new hill record that is still valid today. The win at Holmenkollbakken in Oslo in 1981 remained his greatest success. At the end of the 1981 season he reached second place in the overall World Cup ranking behind the Austrian Armin Kogler .

He was unable to build on that in the following years. He started the 1981/82 season with a victory on the Trampolino Italia in Cortina d'Ampezzo and achieved second place in the overall standings behind Manfred Deckert from the GDR after good individual results in the 1981/82 Four Hills Tournament . Subsequently, victories and podium placements did not materialize for the time being, but he achieved good top 10 placements in the following World Cup competitions. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1982 , he did not get beyond ninth place.

At the beginning of the 1982/83 season Ruud had to struggle with a significant drop in performance. By the end of January 1983, he missed a place in the top ten in all competitions. Only in St. Moritz did Ruud return to the top of the world and with fourth place narrowly missed the podium. In Gstaad he only had to admit defeat to Horst Bulau and finished second. Despite this success, Ruud no longer started in all World Cup competitions.

Surprisingly, shortly before the end of his career on January 8, 1985, after a rather poor Four Hills Tournament in 1984/85, he won the World Cup competition in Cortina d'Ampezzo for the second time since 1981 . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1985 in Seefeld in Tirol , Ruud could not jump to the top positions and in the end took 35th place on the normal hill. His personal end to the season was the World Cup in St. Moritz with a ninth place.

In the following season he started only in St. Moritz and ended his active ski jumping career after a 14th place there and a 68th place in the overall ranking.
