Groyer, who started for his hometown club SV Villach , played his first international jumping competition on January 4, 1978 as part of the Four Hills Tournament 1977/78 in Innsbruck . He reached the 39th place. A year later he achieved his best result to date in Innsbruck with an 18th place. Groyer was part of the senior national team for the newly created ski jumping World Cup in the 1979/80 season . In his first competition on December 27, 1979 in Cortina d'Ampezzo , he was able to jump on the podium with 3rd place. He repeated this success three days later in the opening competition of the Four Hills Tournament 1979/80 in Oberstdorf . At the end of the tour, Groyer finished 5th overall.
At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , Groyer reached 7th place on the normal hill. Shortly after the world championship, he was able to jump into the top 10 in the world cup show jumping in Lahti and reached 9th place. After that his performance decreased noticeably and so he was mostly only in the top 20 in the following competitions. Only in the competitions for the Four Hills Tournament 1980/81 he was denied this. It was not until March 21, 1981 that he was able to attract attention again while jumping on the large hill in Planica and reached 4th place. One day later he was on the podium for the third time in his career on the same hill and reached 3rd place. It then took almost a year until he reached this place for the fourth and last time in his career. He climbed the podium for the last time in the World Cup competition in Lahti. After this World Cup he was only able to jump into the top 10 once more, but in spite of this he reached 12th place in the overall World Cup ranking. The start of 1982/83 went so bad that he retired from international ski jumping for a year. However, he did not make it back to the top of the world in 1984 and ended his active career as a jumper on January 21, 1984 in Sapporo after three unsuccessful jumps .
