Sara Takanashi ( Japanese 高 梨 沙羅 , Takanashi Sara , born October 8, 1996 in Kamikawa , Hokkaidō Prefecture ) is a Japanese ski jumper . She was five-time junior world champion and runner-up world champion in 2013. With 57 daily victories, the sports student is by far the most successful athlete in the ski jumping World Cup , surpassing the male record winner Gregor Schlierenzauer (53 daily victories).

Career

Takanashi made her debut in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup on March 3, 2009 for the season finale of the 2008/09 season in Zaō . She managed to get the points in both competitions. So she finished her first season in 54th place overall. In the following season she was able to steadily improve her performance and regularly achieved placements in the top ten. At the Junior World Championships 2010 in Hinterzarten , she reached seventh place on the normal hill. On March 2, 2010, she managed to jump on the podium for the first time with third place in Zaō. She finished the 2009/10 season in 15th place in the overall Continental Cup ranking.

On December 3, 2011, she made her debut in the newly created Women's World Cup in Lillehammer and finished fifth. She celebrated her first World Cup victory on March 3, 2012 in Yamagata. She won gold in individual jumping at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck. The premiere of the mixed team competition as part of the Summer Grand Prix on August 14, 2012 in Courchevel was won by Takanashi with the Japanese team.

Takanashi 2016 in Hinzenbach

On January 24, 2013 Sara Takanashi won the gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Liberec . She defended her title after having been successful in Erzurum in 2012 .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , she won the gold medal in the mixed team competition with the Japanese team. Two days earlier, she had finished second in the individual competition behind the American Sarah Hendrickson .

With a total of eight World Cup victories, she won the overall World Cup ranking of the 2012/13 season . At the 2013 Summer Grand Prix , Takanashi won four out of six competitions and again the Grand Prix classification. In 2014 , 2015 and 2016 she was able to win the overall Grand Prix standings.

On January 28, 2014, she won the individual junior world championship title for the third time in a row at the Junior World Championships in Val di Fiemme, and just two days later she won the team title together with her teammates. With now 5 titles, in individual and team competitions, she is next to Heinz Kuttin the most successful athlete at junior world championships in ski jumping.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics , surprisingly given her dominance in the World Cup, she only finished fourth, as Takanashi won 15 of the 18 competitions in the 2013/14 World Cup season and was on the podium in all competitions. In the 2014/15 season , she achieved second place in the overall World Cup behind Daniela Iraschko-Stolz , with six daily victories. At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Sweden's Falun could not win a medal in fourth place in the individual again. Together with Yūki Itō , Noriaki Kasai and Taku Takeuchi , she won the bronze medal in the mixed team competition.

In the 2015/16 season , Takanashi won the overall World Cup for the third time in four years. She achieved 14 victories in 17 competitions and was only off the podium once. In the 2016/17 season , Takanashi's dominance eased a little, but after 17 of 19 planned competitions she was the overall World Cup winner ahead of time. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , she was again unable to win the gold medal in the individual competition, but had to be satisfied with bronze behind Carina Vogt and Yūki Itō. In mixed team competition, she formed the Japanese team together with Yūki Itō, Taku Takeuchi and Daiki Itō . The quartet won the bronze medal behind the teams from Germany and Austria.

In the 2017/18 season , Sara Takanashi's dominance was completely broken. She was able to achieve her first two victories of the season in team competition. The first team competition took place in Hinterzarten on December 16, 2017 . Together with Yūki Itō, Kaori Iwabuchi and Yūka Setō , she was able to win this competition. On January 20, she was able to win the second team competition with the Japanese team in her native Yamagata . At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she finished third behind Maren Lundby from Norway and the German Katharina Althaus and was able to win her first Olympic medal. At the World Cup final in Oberstdorf on March 24 and 25, 2018, she achieved her only two individual World Cup victories of the season and the 54th and 55th of her career. With the 54th victory on the first day, she surpassed the Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer (53 World Cup victories) and became the most successful female ski jumper in terms of individual World Cup victories. She finished the season for the first time since 2012 in third place in the overall World Cup after four wins (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017) and a second place (2015).

In the 2018/19 season she achieved the 56th individual World Cup victory on the normal hill in Ljubno on February 10th . She ended a series of six victories for Norwegian Maren Lundby . At the 2019 World Ski Championships in Seefeld in Tirol , she finished sixth in the individual competition and with the Japanese women's team, and came fifth in the final mixed team competition.
