Opening of the Kiel Canal is a British documentary by Birt Acres , which presents the opening ceremony of the Kiel Canal (international name Kiel Canal ). One of the last copies of the film is archived in the Science Museum in London .
Movie content
The film first shows the Kiel Canal. Three men can be seen in a row while a small boat travels through the canal. Finally, a little boy can be seen playing near the action. Further shots show the German imperial couple at the inauguration ceremony.
Background information
The Kiel Canal was officially opened on June 21, 1895, but the film title dates the event to June 20, 1895. The illustration documents the first voyage through the Kiel Canal. The film is considered to be the oldest film recording made in Germany.
A little later, Birt Acres produced the film The German Emperor Reviewing His Troops , which shows a troop inspection by Kaiser Wilhelm II. His filming probably played a decisive role in the emperor developing great interest in this new medium and including it in his self-staging earlier than other monarchs.
