Events
- March 22nd : Auguste and Louis Lumière screened their first film in front of a closed audience. The film shows workers leaving the Lumière works .
- In Great Britain Robert William Paul and the photographer Birt Acres develop a film camera and a projector based on the model of the cinetographer by Thomas Alva Edison . On March 30th they will film the annual rowing competition at Oxford and Cambridge Universities for the first time .
- June 21 : Kaiser Wilhelm II opens the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal, named after his grandfather, in a festive ceremony . The ceremony is filmed by the Briton Birt Acres with a film camera; his film Opening of the Kiel Canal is considered the oldest film recording in Germany.
- August 28 : Thomas Edison publishes the short film The Execution of Mary Stuart , which he produced and is considered the first historical film in history. Alfred Clark directs. The first stop trick in film history is performed when the actor who plays Mary Stuart is replaced by a doll.
- November 1st : with the bioscope , an early projection device, the Skladanowsky brothers in Berlin show a number of films (including The Boxing Kangaroo ) to a paying audience. This is considered to be the first public film screening in Europe.
- December 28 : The Lumiere brothers carry babies breakfast and a further 9 films before a paying audience of a Parisian cafes. Further demonstrations will follow.
