Emil Stepanek
Emil Stepanek (born February 21, 1895 in Vienna ; † April 12, 1945 there ) was an Austrian theater painter and film architect .
The son of a carpenter's assistant received training as a theater painter, as which he worked for a few years. From 1916 to 1918 he had to do military service. After the First World War he returned to his work as a theater painter and had his first contact with film in 1919. In the following years he often worked with the renowned film architects Julius von Borsody , Artur Berger and Alexander Ferenczy . For example, in the monumental films directed by Alexander Korda and Michael Curtiz , the Sascha-Film : Prince and Beggar Boy (1920), Sodom and Gomorrah (1922), The Slave Queen (1924) and Salammbô (1924).
Until 1936 he stayed with the film decoration department. He then worked in executive production . In 1944 he became head of the entire stage construction in the Rosenhügel film studios . On April 12, 1945, one day before the end of the fighting in Vienna during the Second World War ( Vienna Operation 1945 ), Emil Stepanek was killed under unexplained circumstances.
