Sidney Alderman Blackmer (born July 13, 1895 in Salisbury , North Carolina , † October 5, 1973 in New York City , New York ) was an American actor .

Life

Sidney Blackmer first studied law and then decided to train as an actor. From 1917 he appeared on numerous stages. His film career began after the introduction of the sound film. In the first years he was very often cast for villain roles (for example in Little Caesar , directed by Mervyn LeRoy ), in the later years he was also seen more often in the character subject. His star role on stage and in film was US President Theodore Roosevelt , whom he played ten times. One of his last film roles was also one of his best known, namely that of the satanist neighbor Roman Castevet in the horror film Rosemary's Baby . In total, he was seen in around 175 film and television productions, most recently in 1971.

In 1950 he was awarded the Tony Award for Best Actor for his performance in the Broadway -Stück Come Back, Little Sheba of William Inge excellent. In 1960 Blackmer received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . In 1968, he was named Best Supporting Actor by the Kansas City Film Critics Circle for his role in Rosemary's Baby . Blackmer was married to actress Lenore Ulric (1892-1970) from 1929 until the divorce in 1938 . In 1943 he married the actress Suzanne Kaaren (1912-2004), with whom he remained married until his death in 1973 and had two sons.
