Tammy is an American romantic comedy directed by Joseph Pevney from 1957. It is based on Cid Ricketts Sumner's novel Tammy Out of Time .

action

Since her grandmother's death, 17-year-old Tammy has lived alone with her grandfather John Dinwitty on a houseboat in the wilderness. She grew up far away from the cities, her best friend is her goat Nan. One day a small plane crashes not far from the houseboat. Tammy and her grandfather are able to rescue the seriously injured pilot. After five days of delirium , Peter Brent wakes up and Tammy cares for him lovingly. They both go swimming and Tammy, who has never learned restraint, speaks openly with Peter about the possibility that he could teach her all love things that she has no idea about. She only knows the love for God as described in the Bible. From Peter, she knows that he is not married and that he often has arguments with his girlfriend Barbara. Nevertheless, one day Peter decides to return home, as his parents do not yet know that he has survived. He promises never to forget Tammy. She is heartbroken over his departure.

Weeks go by without Tammy hearing from Peter. One day her grandfather informs her that he has been arrested for illegal distilling. She should go to Peter, as both of them once agreed that Tammy could live with him if something happened to Grandfather. Tammy and Nan go to Peter's house, which turns out to be a magnificent property. Tammy falls asleep in front of the entrance because a dance is being rehearsed inside. From Tammy's tired words, Peter concludes that John Dinwitty has passed away. The next day, his parents are horrified to hear that grandfather is in jail instead. Only Aunt Renie, an unconventional painter, is delighted with Tammy's easygoing nature.

Tammy learns a lot of new things over the next few days, learns that water can also come out of the wall and that certain things simply shouldn't be said. Peter's mother, Deena, ends up advising Tammy to rarely open her mouth. Deena is particularly concerned about the upcoming Pilgrimage Week, when all residents of the house for tourists slip into clothes from the time of the first pilgrims and show them around the house, which worries Deena, who believes that Tammy's kind could throw a bad image on the family. In the end, her naivety brings Tammy to the point where she lets Peter’s best friend Ernie take her out, even though he has no good intentions. It is Peter who shows up on time. He drives her into town, where Tammy is amazed at the crowds and the shop windows. Nevertheless, her unrequited love for Peter worries her more and more, especially since he sticks to his relationship with Barbara. However, the latter does not have a deeper understanding of him and cannot understand his farmer efforts: Peter tries to grow a weather-resistant tomato plant that should also bear fruit earlier than conventional plants. Barbara, in turn, wants Peter to take a job with her father.

At Pilgrimage Week, Aunt Renie makes Tammy wear a dress from her grandmother, who once appeared on foot at the farm and raptured the master of the house. Peter is taken with Tammy's appearance, even if Barbara pushes herself into the foreground with her dress. In front of the tourists, Tammy enchants with her story of the dress and her arrival on the farm many years ago. So she can convince Deena of herself. At night it begins to hail and rain. Peter and Tammy try in vain to save the tomato plants. Peter gives up and takes over the job with Barbara's father. Tammy is disappointed and goes back to her houseboat, which Peter only finds out the next morning. Now he realizes that he loves Tammy, especially since Barbara cannot compromise. He gets John Dinwitty out of jail and goes to see Tammy. She is happy to see him and is finally allowed to kiss him after many unsuccessful attempts.
