Philip Ober
Philip Nott Ober (born March 23, 1902 in Fort Payne , Alabama , † September 13, 1982 in Mexico City , Mexico ) was an American actor and diplomat .
life and career
Philip Ober graduated from Princeton University and initially worked as an advertising specialist for various US magazines. In the early 1930s, he switched to the acting business, initially almost exclusively as a theater actor on Broadway or with traveling actors. He was only drawn into the film business in Hollywood when he was hired by Mel Ferrer for a supporting role in The Black Avalanche (1951). Ober was quickly able to establish himself as a successful character actor in the film and television business and was primarily specialized in the portrayal of strict to rogue authority figures. He had one of his best roles as a hateful army officer in the Oscar-winning drama Damned for All Eternity (1953), whose neglected wife ( Deborah Kerr ) begins an affair with one of his soldiers.
Other appearances in films such as The Broken Lance (1954) with Spencer Tracy and A Man in His Prime (1958) with Gary Cooper followed. In Alfred Hitchcock's classic film The Invisible Third (1959), Ober took on the role of the murdered UN delegate Mr. Townsend in 1959. In addition to his film appearances, Ober has also made prominent guest roles in television series such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents , Bonanza and Charming Jeannie . After nearly 100 film and television roles, he retired from the acting business in the late 1960s and emigrated to Mexico. He worked as a diplomat in the US consulate in Mexico City and died there in 1982 at the age of 80 of a heart attack. He was buried in the Chapel Of The Pines Crematory in Los Angeles .
Philip Ober was married three times: from 1923 until his divorce in 1941 with Phyllis Roper, from this marriage he had one child. In August 1941 he married the actress Vivian Vance , who became famous primarily for the series I Love Lucy , in which Ober also had two guest appearances. However, the marriage was less happy and divorced in 1959, Ober is said to have even beaten Vance regularly. In 1961 he married Jane Westover, his third marriage, which lasted until his death.
