from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard H. Riedel (born April 5, 1904 in Leipzig ; † March 18, 1960 near Rome , Italy ) was a German film architect in Hollywood .

Live and act

Riedel had attended grammar school in Germany and then received his artistic training at a college for graphics and fine arts. After graduating from Leipzig, he emigrated to the USA, where he began his film career in 1932 as a draftsman at RKO Pictures . Four years later he was allowed to work as an architect for the first time.

From the beginning of his career as a production designer, Riedel worked exclusively for Universal Studios . His most interesting early works include two atmospheric Rowland V. Lee productions, including the third part of the Frankenstein series with Boris Karloff , Frankenstein's son . In the years to come, Riedel oversaw a long series of Universal B-Pictures as well as a few more ambitious productions, including works as diverse as the remarkable science fiction film Metaluna IV Doesn't Answer , Douglas Sirk's Hollywood Farewell As Long As There Are People And The Comedy classic Bettgeflüster with Rock Hudson and Doris Day . During this time, Riedel often appeared as an assistant to his colleague Alexander Golitzen , who was in charge of the set construction at Universal.

Riedel died in a car accident in 1960 while preparing (visiting locations) for a new film (" Back Street ") in Rome.
