action

Once again the Bullock family from New York is having a party. All family members are proud to be in the top 10,000 and always have quirky ideas. Today a kind of "street sweeper competition" is to be organized: Everyone is called upon to pick up something crazy on the street and bring it with them. By chance, the young Irene Bullock comes across an individual under a bridge, unshaven, shabby, as a rascal looks like. For 10 dollars, the man agrees to be taken to the party as "clutter".

In the Bullock house, Gottfried - that's how the stranger calls himself - is destined to entertain the guests. He cuts such a good figure that Irene falls in love with him and asks him to take the vacant position of butler. Angelica Bullock, the lady of the house, and Cordelia, her second daughter, are also delighted with the idea. Gottfried gladly agrees with so much compassion.

It doesn't take long before Cordelia makes every effort to seduce the new maid by, for example, wagging around him, wearing only a towel. Maybe she's just trying to make her sister jealous! In any case, Gottfried's advances leave them cold.

One day, Francesca appears in the Villa, no longer very young, but rich, beautiful and divorced several times, a "man-murdering" beast. No sooner has she seen the butler than she reveals that she has met him before. He is said to have left a wife and five children. Irene's crush quickly turns into anger. Defiantly she announces her engagement to Howard in front of the whole company, whom she doesn't like at all and who knows nothing about his happiness.

Little by little, Irene learns that Gottfried, before she “picked him up”, jumped from a Danish freighter and swam ashore. In any case, he does not have an entry permit into the states, so he is an illegal person. He comes from an old Austrian noble family and is actually called "von Lauterbach". After escaping from Russian captivity, he earned a living as a seaman.

Because Cordula Gottfried does not allow her sister and she has no chance with him, she suddenly misses a diamond bracelet very loudly. Immediately the suspicion fell on Gottfried, and soon the police summoned discovered the piece of jewelry under his mattress. But because Cordula gets entangled in contradictions, she has to admit her outrage. Although Gottfried's reputation has been restored, the incident cannot hide the fact that Gottfried is now known to the police and that sooner or later there will be difficulties with the authorities. To avoid this trouble, he wants to leave America as soon as possible. When Irene decides not to let Gottfried go in the first place, it is already too late. He's on his way to the port.

Irene chases after her lover like a madwoman, pursued by the police. When she finally arrived at the port, she had to watch Gottfried set sail with a ship. Fortunately, the policeman turns out to be a true friend: He takes the lady to a pilot's launch.

Half an hour later the door to Gottfried's cabin opens. The captain winks at the noble passenger and pushes a happy lady across the threshold. As soon as the ship is in neutral waters, he will perform the wedding ceremony.

background

In the role of the butler, OW Fischer , one of the great German-speaking film stars of the time, was to make his debut in Hollywood and become an international film star. However, Fischer had text problems and fell out with director Koster, whereupon he left the production a few days after shooting began and was replaced by David Niven.

Reviews

"Remarkably brisk comedy of the best American style with an abundance of casual, cheerful ideas."

"The parody with which the Americans hold up against their minor and major weaknesses makes the film a nice and amusing entertainment."

Awards

David Niven was nominated for the Golden Globe in the category Best Actor - Comedy or Musical in 1958 .
