Three cute girls (OT: Three Smart Girls ) is an American comedy film from 1936 in which Deanna Durbin had her breakthrough to stardom. The direction was directed by Henry Koster , who made seven other films with Durbin together with producer Joe Pasternak . Deanna Durbin played the role of Penny Craig again in the two sequels Three Smart Girls Grow Up from 1939 and Hers to Hold , which came out in 1943.

action

The three sisters Joan, Kay and Penny live in Switzerland with their mother Dorothy Craig, who has been divorced for ten years. When they hear that their father, Judson Craig, wants to marry the calculating society matron Donna Lyons, the three decide to stop him. Many romantic entanglements later manage to reconcile the Craig sister with her parents.

background

Deanna Durbin was already known for her amazing vocal talent in mid-1936, despite being only 14 years old, when Universal Studios signed her. Just before that, Durbin had made her debut alongside Judy Garland in the short film Every Sunday and has since appeared on several popular radio shows, including Eddie Cantor . Her first film was produced in a little under a month for $ 319,107, but ended up grossing a good $ 1,635,000. Durbin, who received a fee of $ 20,000, had risen to become the studio's biggest - and for a long time only - star practically overnight. Together with director Henry Koster and producer Joe Pasternak, Durbin made seven other films together. Though all of the films were tremendous financial hits, Durbin never made it into the Motion Picture Herald's annual list of top 10 box office stars.

The material was remade in 1948 under the title Three Little Beasts with Jane Powell in the role of Durbin and Jeanette MacDonald from MGM .

music

The film developed the formula for all subsequent Durbin films. The young soprano liked to sing, often a mix of current songs and classical works. As the story progresses, Deanna Durbin voices, among other things:

In addition, the wedding marches from Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Richard Wagner's Lohengrin are performed.

Awards

The film was nominated in three categories at the Academy Awards in 1937 :

  • Best movie
  • Best Original Story (Adele Comandini)
  • Best note (Homer G. Tasker)
