Hobart Cavanaugh

Hobart Cavanaugh (born September 22, 1886 in Virginia City , Nevada , † April 27, 1950 in Woodland Hills , Los Angeles , California ) was an American film and stage actor.

life and career

Hobart Cavanaugh was born in the gold rush town of Virginia City.

His father worked there as a railroad engineer, and the family later moved to California. At first he wanted to become an engineer like his father and studied at the University of California. But he switched to acting and made his Broadway debut in 1916. He remained connected to Broadway in over a dozen pieces until 1948.

Cavanaugh made his film debut in 1928 in the film San Francisco Nights on the side of Mae Busch , then he was able to establish himself as a supporting actor.

Cavanaugh often embodied the "little man" who is not taken seriously by other movie characters and exploited for all purposes. Often his characters appeared a little nervous or sappy, but in some films Cavanaugh's characters turned out to be villains at the end of the film. In the mid-1930s, Cavanaugh achieved his greatest success with supporting roles in Michael Curtiz 'adventure film Unter Piratenflagge , in Max Reinhardt's version of A Midsummer Night's Dream as Philostrat and in His Secretary alongside Clark Gable and Jean Harlow . He played several times with James Cagney . He also worked as a narrator for three documentaries.

In 1913 he married Florence Hester, they had one child. Hobart Cavanaugh was buried in the celebrity cemetery Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City .
