Frank Michaelson, lawyer and chairman of his city's education committee, is about to be suspended. The reason for this are three more than embarrassing photos that show him and that were printed in American newspapers: Frank, who is carried off by police officers on a sit-in for writings that are detrimental to morality; Frank, being led out of a brothel by the police - the prostitute still hanging on his shoulder; and Frank jumping off a steamer into the Seine at a nudists' ball dressed only in underwear . And so Frank begins to recapitulate the background to the three pictures.
It all started when his eldest daughter Mollie began studying painting in college after graduating from high school. She sings folk songs in a bar and sends her family a record of one of her performances. Since a viewer can be heard shouting “Undress!”, Father Frank's fantasy goes over and he travels after Mollie: The little daughter has to be rescued from this den of iniquity , which turns out to be a completely harmless place. The politically active child spends the next day on a sit-in against the ban on Henry Miller's books in the local library. Frank just wants to keep her from doing that, as he read one of Miller's books the day before and was horrified. However, Frank is arrested as a supposedly aggressive demonstrator and his picture gets into the newspaper.
Mollie flies from college and shortly afterwards receives a scholarship to study art at the Académie des nouveaux arts in Paris , which was organized for her by her admirer Henri Bonnet. They become a couple in Paris, but a painting by Bonnet in a magazine that shows Mollie with five breasts in Picasso 's style makes Frank think the worst again. So he goes to Paris, does not find Mollie in her student apartment and then only wants to order a taxi by phone. The next phone is in a brothel and a raid is promptly carried out there, which leads to the second compromising photo.
The last photo is also created from a harmless situation. Mollie persuades her father not to go back home until the next day, as a carnival party is to take place on a ship that evening , where Bonnet, who wants to marry her, wants to introduce her to his aristocratic parents. The mother in particular is critical of Mollie after seeing Frank's photo in the newspaper. Frank goes to the carnival party as a trapper . Before that, he used a hot blade to treat the seams of his costume against lice , whereupon his costume gradually dissolves over the next few hours until Frank escapes into the Seine on the run from photographers who mistake him for James Stewart.
Frank leaves the next day because he realizes that his daughter really loves her boyfriend Henri Bonnet and that Mollie would marry even against his mother's wishes. In fact, they both get married on the same day. Frank's suspension is not implemented after his detailed description of the circumstances, as the men and women present in the consultation room begin to complain about their teenage children. Frank now thinks that he knows how to deal with adolescents and will be more relaxed in the future. However, it quickly becomes apparent that he will have the same problems with his younger daughter Liz.

After the 1962 comedy Mr. Hobbs is on vacation , In Liebe was a 1 of the second of three films that James Stewart made in a short time under the direction of Henry Koster for 20th Century Fox. In Love One is based on Phoebe and Henry Ephron 's Broadway production Take Her, She's Mine , which was performed 404 times with Art Carney as the stressed-out father.
