John McGiver (born November 5, 1913 in New York City , † September 9, 1975 in West Fulton , New York ) was an American film actor.

life and career

John McGiver was born in New York City to Irish immigrants. He initially worked full-time as an English teacher at a high school , in his spare time he worked as a director and actor at the Irish Repertory Theater in New York. In the meantime he also served as a soldier in World War II . He had already had the intention of becoming an actor since he was at university, but it was only by chance - an old school colleague and theater producer offered him a leading role because the star had spontaneously left the production - brought McGiver full-time into acting in 1955. This was the beginning of a successful career as a character actor for the little, almost bald McGiver.

From 1955 to 1975 McGiver appeared in more than a hundred films and television roles, often in small, often comical roles. He got his first film role in Billy Wilder's comedy Ariane - Love in the Afternoon in 1957 , where he played a deceived, fatalistic husband who wants to kill his wife's lover, played by Gary Cooper . His best-known roles include the friendly Tiffany salesman in Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961); the honorable but unfortunate Senator Thomas Jordan in Ambassadors of Fear (1962); and the religious fanatic Mr. O'Daniel in Asphalt Cowboy (1969).

From 1947 until his death he was married to his wife Ruth Schmigelsky, with whom he had ten children. He died of a heart attack at the age of 61. His son Boris McGiver is also an actor.
