Celine Rudolph (* 1969 in Berlin ) is a German jazz singer.

Live and act

Rudolph was born in Berlin in 1969 to a French mother and a German father. She first studied rhetoric and philosophy, then from 1991 to 1997 jazz singing and composition teaching at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin with David Friedman , Jerry Granelli , Kirk Nurock and Catherine Gayer (classical singing).

In 1990 she founded her first band Out of Print together with the pianist Volker Kottenhahn , the bassist Dirk Strakhof and the drummer Johannes Bockholt , with which she recorded two albums and toured the Balkans and Africa. She subsequently worked with musicians such as Bob Moses , Anthony Cox , Marc Ducret and Gary Peacock . In 1995 she studied with the African percussionist Famoudou Konaté .

At the end of the 1990s, she moved to Cologne , where she performed in a duo with Christian Thomé . She also worked with Lauren Newton , Gabriele Hasler , Bobby McFerrin , Lee Konitz , David Friedman and the United Women's Orchestra . She also participated in crossover projects such as the adaptation of Arnold Schönberg's Pierrot Lunaire by Peter Fulda , the radio production Barock meets Jazz with Gérard Lesne and the recording of Moritz Eggert's composition Wide Unclasp . 2004 her compositions were performed at the Cologne Triennale of Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra listed.

In 2006 Rudolph worked with the trumpeter Dusko Goykovich on his CD "Samba Tzigane", with André Nendza's A-Tronic and prepared a new project to which the Goethe-Institut Lisbon invited her as musical director: "Lisboa-Maputo-Berlin" : She immersed herself in the Lisbon-based Portuguese-speaking African music scene as "Goethe artist in residence" to work in a quintet with Ruben Alves, João Gomes, Gogui and Chico Fernandes and other guest musicians on a sound mix of different cultures. The project premiered in the “ Centro Cultural de Belém ” in Lisbon , in Maputo and in 2008 in the Hebbel am Ufer Theater in Berlin (guests: Julia Hülsmann , Aly Keïta , Stewart Sukuma, Rüdiger Krause ). The TV documentary "Lisboa-Maputo-Berlin" premiered on July 3, 2009 in Lisbon.

In the same year Rudolph completed their album “Brazaventure” together with the producer Rodolfo Stroeter . To the recordings in São Paulo have included Marcos Suzano , Toninho Ferragutti , Paulo Bellinati , Mônica Salmaso and Sergio Santos involved. The premiere was celebrated in São Paulo's “ SESC Pompéia ” with the band “Pau Brasil”. The album was released in 2007 by Enja in Europe and Asia. In 2007 and 2008 the recordings for their album "Metamorflores" with Naná Vasconcelos , Rodolfo Stroeter, Ricardo Mosca, Toninho Ferragutti, Diego Figueiredo, Marlui Miranda , Paulo Bellinati, Rüdiger Krause, Till Brönner and the São Paulo String Orchestra, which appeared in 2009, were made. In 2008, Celine Rudolph wrote and sang the chanson Soumise à la tentation to Till Brönner's soundtrack for the film “Between Today and Tomorrow” by Fred Breinersdorfer .

In 2011 Rudolph recorded her album "Salvador", with texts by Henri Salvador , in German and French. The publication took place at Universal. The album entered the jazz charts at number five and received positive reviews from the press: "It combines Brazilian grooves with German lyrics - and the experiment works". In 2012 Rudolph took part in the recordings of Wolfgang Haffner 's "Heart Of The Matter". In the same year Rudolph transferred the title "Va" from Charles Aznavour into German ("Geh").

In 2013, Rudolph went into the studio with New York musicians Jamire Williams, Lionel Loueke , Burniss Travis, Leo Genovese , John Ellis and songwriter Josh Mease. The recordings were released in 2019 under the title Pearls . In 2015, Lionel Loueke began working as a duo. After international concerts, joint studio recordings followed. The resulting album "Obsession" was recorded and released in October 2017 on Rudolph's own label Obsessions. Since 2016 she has also been on the road as a solo artist.

Rudolph has been professor for jazz, rock and pop singing at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden since 2003 .

Prizes and awards

With the Fábula group , Rudolph won the JazzArt - Music of the 21st Century Prize in 2001 and, in the same year, with the Mosaïq group, the North Rhine-Westphalia scene competition at the Leverkusen Jazz Days . In 2010 she was awarded the ECHO Jazz as “Best Female Singer 2010” for her CD “ Metamorflores ”, which was produced in Brazil .
