German jazz charts

The German Jazzcharts (currently Jazz Top 20 ) is a chart analysis by the market research company GfK Entertainment , which is published monthly. They contain the most successful jazz albums on the music market and are the official jazz charts in Germany.

General information and qualification criteria

The German jazz charts have been determined on behalf of the Federal Association of the Music Industry since 2005 . At the beginning the market research company Media Control was responsible for the chart survey, since 2013 this has been done by GfK Entertainment . The jazz charts record sales of image or sound carriers , downloads and music streaming with jazz as the end consumer. Jazz is defined here as music that is interpreted by jazz artists or the "jazz music-related artist" as well as music recordings from improvisations and jam sessions . The allocation to the jazz genre is determined by registering in the PHONONET article master. Ultimately, they are “ repertoire charts” that depict the “jazz” market segment. If video or sound carriers are identified as jazz products in the PHONONET article base, but obviously do not belong in this repertoire segment (incorrect labeling), GfK Entertainment should disregard messages, provided the responsible distributor agrees. In cases of doubt, the examiner will decide. The German jazz charts are not just repertoire charts, but also “artist charts”; this means that compilations and samplers by different artists are not taken into account. In addition, soundtracks or crossover products are not permitted. Jazz products encoded as “pop” must be reported to GfK for inclusion in the jazz charts , accompanied by a sample copy. In cases of doubt, auditors will decide. The “correctness” check is carried out on the basis of the weekly “jazz trends” made available to the examiner by GfK.

The German jazz charts are an excerpt from the regular album Top 100 , in which sales are recorded regardless of any repertoire segment. A parallel placement of a product in both the Album Top 100 and the Jazz Top 20 is therefore not only possible in principle, but will be the rule for products that sell well. Only those products are qualified for the Jazz Top 20 if they have a dealer range of at least two dealer groupings, which means that at least two of the dealer groups recorded in the sample must have sold at least one product of the relevant product each month in order for it to be included in the Jazzcharts can qualify. The panel used to determine the jazz charts corresponds to the panel used to determine the album top 100 . The formation of the sample differs from the TOP 100 charts in that the sample for the jazz charts only includes retailers who also report sales of jazz products.

The German jazz charts were introduced in 2005 as a monthly top 30 hit parade for music albums . With the “chart relaunch” in May 2015, GfK wanted to present the genre charts as a uniform top 20 charts, so that the jazz charts were only published as a top 20 hit parade from now on. The survey is based on full weeks from Friday to Thursday. Sales weeks that are in different months are assigned to the month in which the majority of the sales days are.
