background

General information

The official German Schlagercharts are determined by the German market research company GfK Entertainment on behalf of the Bundesverband Musikindustrie (BVMI). They record sales of image and sound carriers, downloads and music streaming with German hits to end consumers. These are “ repertoire charts” that depict the “German Schlager” market segment. They represent an excerpt from the regular German music charts ( album / single charts ), in which sales are recorded regardless of any repertoire segment. The Official German Schlagercharts are not only repertoire charts, but also “artist charts”, meaning samplers are not taken into account. A parallel placement of a product in both the Top 100 Charts and the Official German Schlagercharts is therefore not only possible in principle, but is the rule for products that sell well.

The introduction of the Official German Schlagercharts took place in January 2001. First, the 20 most successful Schlager products were determined separately for albums and singles each month. Since 2004, the official German hit charts have only been determined for albums. Until June 2015, a monthly chart evaluation of the 20 most successful hit albums was carried out, which was published by the German-language online music service Musicline.de . Since July 3, 2015, the official German Schlagercharts have been determined weekly and published by the German-language music portal Schlager.de . In addition to the weekly chart lists, GfK Entertainment has been publishing monthly hit lists again since April 2018. This is a compilation of the 50 most successful products of a month, just like it was before the weekly publication, only that this hit parade is run in parallel and with 50 instead of 20 titles.

Qualification criteria

Only those products are qualified for the “Official German Schlagercharts” that reach a “dealer breadth” of at least two “dealer groupings”, i.e. at least two of the dealer groupings recorded in the sample must have sold at least one product of the relevant title (weekly) in order to do so it can qualify for the "Official German Schlagercharts". The panel used to determine the “Official German Schlagercharts” and the formation of the sample correspond completely to the panel used to determine the top 100 charts. All image or sound carriers, downloads and music streaming that are marked as "German hit products" in the Phononet article stock are permitted, with the exception of compilations or samplers. To distinguish between regular albums and compilations, the same rules apply as for the compilation of the official Top 100 charts . It is a compilation if the product contains titles by more than two different performers ( soloists , ensembles , orchestras ). This does not apply to products that can be characterized as a project or related work (e.g. concert). If products in the Phononet article master are marked as "German Schlagerprodukte", but obviously do not belong in this repertoire segment (incorrect labeling), GfK Entertainment should not consider these titles for the official German Schlagercharts . Products that are not coded as "German Schlager" must be shown to GfK Entertainment for inclusion in the Official German Schlagercharts , with a sample copy being enclosed. In cases of doubt, the examination officers appointed by the Marketing Committee decide . The “correctness” of the assignment is checked on the basis of the weekly “German Schlager Trends”, which are made available to the examiners and the “repertoire specialists” named by the record companies by GfK Entertainment.

Schlager Top 50 (Albums)

The official top 50 hits for albums have been determined monthly since April 2018. The determination is made on the same basis as that of the top 20 hits from 2001 to 2015, only that this hit parade is now parallel to the weekly determination and contains 50 instead of the previous 20 places. The first album that was able to place itself at the top of the chart of the monthly evaluations that were reintroduced was the compilation Das Beste von Fantasy by the German hit band Fantasy . The official German Schlager Top 50 are presented on the last Friday of each month by Bernhard Brink in the MDR show Die Schlager des Monats .

Former hit parades

Schlager Top 20 (Singles)
