List of number one hits in Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article contains various information and statistics from the official German single charts since recording began on December 1, 1953.

Database and information on the interpretation of the statistics listed

Until May 1959, the number one hits in the Federal Republic of Germany were based on the boxing parade of the machine market (determined monthly). From June 1959 to January 1965 the number one hits are taken from the music market hit parade (determined monthly). From February 1965 to December 1970 the FRG charts were determined by the music market every six months. Since 1971, the single week sales figures have been used as a benchmark. The music market determined these figures until 1977, Media Control GmbH & Co. KG from 1977 and GfK Entertainment since 2013 . There are also books and lists that have been keeping weekly charts since 1956. These are lists interpolated from the monthly charts . There are no official lists of the sales figures for records in the GDR.

Note: In previous years it was sometimes common to group different versions of a song by different performers. In addition to the main artist, these other artists are added in brackets.

The evaluations of the German single charts presented here only describe performers who stayed at the top of the official German single charts particularly often or for a particularly long time. However, no sales figures or further commercial success can be derived from this. For example, the single Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc) by the British pop group Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark was the best-selling single of 1982, although the single was "only" at the top of the single charts for four weeks. In the same year, the Spider Murphy Gang topped the list for eight weeks with their song Scandal in the Restricted Area and FR David with the play Words for eleven weeks. This must also be taken into account when considering and interpreting the individual year statistics.
