Confessions on a Dance Floor (German: "Confessions on a dance floor") is the tenth studio album by the singer Madonna . It was published in Germany on November 11, 2005. The sound of the album was inspired by the disco music of the 1970s and 1980s as well as modern club sounds.

Overall, Confessions on a Dance Floor is one of Madonna's most successful albums. It stayed in the top ten for the longest time, and the first single, Hung Up, sold approximately 8.6 million copies. Both album and single hold the record of having reached number 1 in the charts of most countries.

background

Madonna began work on the new album in early 2005 with Stuart Price, the co-producer of American Life , with whom she had already worked on the previous tour. Both described the joint work between Los Angeles and Stockholm as "simple, straightforward and very profitable". Titles were created that openly acknowledge their role models from the 1970s and 1980s: ABBA ( Hung Up ), Pet Shop Boys ( Jump ), Donna Summer ( Future Lovers ) and the Jackson Five ( Sorry ). This was combined with modern sounds from Goldfrapp , Daft Punk and Air , which Madonna named as further inspiration. "I want people to jump up from their seats because my album is about having fun non-stop," Madonna said in her first statements about the album.

Stuart Price tested the individual titles in clubs on Ibiza and in England, in his function as a DJ, for dance suitability. In addition, short instrumental pre-versions of the first single Hung Up were launched on the Internet to test the reactions of the fans. The special thing about this album was the shape of the album: In the style of their remix album You Can Dance from 1987, the album presents itself as a long megamix in which the individual tracks merge. For the digital purchase of the individual songs, the individual titles were provided with their own intros and endings.

The promotion for the new album included several appearances in well-known clubs and shows in France, England, Italy, Germany, Japan and the USA. The album thus made it to number one in the album charts in 40 countries. In the first month alone, the album sold over three million times worldwide. The pre-released single Hung Up was number one in the singles charts in 41 countries, making it one of their greatest hits. The second single Sorry made it to number one on the charts in Italy, Spain and Great Britain, where it set a new record.

Despite worldwide record reports, Madonna was unable to transfer the success of the album and the singles to the USA, although Confessions on a Dance Floor was No. 1 in the Billboard album charts: Since her critical statements against the US President George W. Bush in the third The Iraq war is largely ignored by US radio stations and can only place itself on the Billboard charts through CD purchases and downloads.

  • In the US, Madonna's singles were no longer played by many US radio stations due to critical statements against the Iraq war and George W. Bush and were for the most part only able to place themselves in the Billboard charts by selling downloads.

Hung Up

Background information

The album's lead single was released on October 17, 2005. A motif from the ABBA hit Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) quotes. Hung Up is about a woman who is tired of waiting for a man who constantly shows doubts. According to About.Com , Hung Up is a typical dance song with the main theme of love. Hung Up reached number 1 in the singles charts in 41 countries.

Hung Up samples a line of text from an older Madonna song, Love Song :

“Time goes by so slowly for those who wait. And those who run seem to have all the fun. "

Music video

The music video for this song shows Madonna dancing in a ballet studio and in a club. Furthermore, you can see several dancers in a city, among others dancing in the subway, a restaurant and at a high-rise.
