Music is Madonna's eighth studio album . It was released in September 2000.

background

Music is the follow-up album to the multiple Grammy- winning album Ray of Light , which sold 26 million copies. This album is more based on US airplay , dominated by (computer- distorted ) guitars and a voice alienated by vocoder . The album is very different from Madonna's previous albums and was mainly produced by the progressive underground musician Mirwais , whose club hits Disco Science (2000) and Naive Song Madonna had made a big impression. Sounds and fragments of his albums Mirwais (1999) and Production (2000) can be found on Music .

The singles were successful in the charts - especially the pre-release American Piewhich, however, was placed on the European and Asian edition of the album against Madonna's will. In the USA, however, the number 1 hit was not released.

The title single Music , whose video sparked a long-lasting fashion trend (cowboy hat and hipsters), was even more successful . The following singles placed successfully in the charts: Do not Tell Me , whose video again took up the cowboy theme and What It Feels Like For a Girl , for which a disturbing controversial video of her then-husband, director Guy Ritchie was filmed, . The song itself only appeared as a trance mix from the successful British DJ trio Above & Beyond . The song Paradise (Not for Me) was originally included on Mirwai's album, but Madonna eventually adopted it in a slightly modified version for this album and also made a video for it that was performed on the Drowned World Tour .

Another dispute between Madonna and the record company Warner Bros. prevented a final single release: Warner Bros. insisted on Amazing (which resulted in the few promo singles ) - in return Madonna refused to play the song on the Drowned World Tour at the time for a live -Video to prevent. She insisted on Impressive Instant as the last single. The record company thought the techno song was too risky - it ultimately only appeared as a promo single and thus reached number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Music / Club Play charts .

Music was also a premiere in other respects: for the first time, a complete album was available almost three months before the actual release on the Internet on file sharing sites like Napster . Even Madonna's official homepage was hacked . The complete album (and bootleg remixes) could be downloaded there for several hours - but this did not endanger the success of the album: It was well received by critics and fans and with 15 million copies sold as well as its predecessor Ray of Light . The album was advertised with two concerts at which the new songs were presented: the first in New York City (Roseland Ballroom) and the second in London (Brixton Academy). The concerts were broadcast live on the internet.

In 2006 the album was named one of Capital Gold's All-Time Top 500 on the UK charts.

Music is the only Madonna album in the list of the “500 best albums of all time” by the German-language Rolling Stone from 2004 (at number 310).
