Hans Uno Jonas Åkerlund (born November 10, 1965 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish music video and film director .
Life
Åkerlund was the drummer for the Swedish metal band Bathory from 1983 to 1984 . At first he mainly shot music videos for Swedish bands. His international breakthrough came with the scandalous video Smack My Bitch Up for the British band The Prodigy in 1997.
In 2002 his first feature film, Spun, was released . He has also directed commercials for major brands, including Hugo Boss , Sony , Dell , Volkswagen , Coca-Cola , Ikea and Adidas .
Today his customers include numerous well-known musicians, including U2 , Metallica , Madonna , Lady Gaga , Beyoncé , Pink , The Rolling Stones , Paul McCartney , Robbie Williams , Coldplay , Ozzy Osbourne , Queens of the Stone Age and Pussy Riot .
In 2009, Åkerlund also shot the video for the Rammstein group's song Pussy with lots of quick cuts and digital effects so it looks like the musicians are having real sex. The video was censored, the video can only be seen uncensored on erotic sites and various video portals on the Internet. Åkerlund shot a total of four videos for the Berlin band: In addition to Pussy , it was man against man in 2007 , I hurt you in 2009 and Mein Land in 2011 .
In March 2017, Åkerlund released the concert film Rammstein: Paris together with the musicians . This film, whose raw material was produced during two concerts and a dress rehearsal for the band in March 2012 in the then Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy , is also characterized by fast, hard cuts and bizarre effects. On October 26, 2017, his film won the UK Music Video Award 2017 in the Best live concert category in the Roundhouse in the London borough of Camden . This honors particularly creative, innovative or technically high-quality music film and music video productions.
He has also received numerous awards for a few other music videos and concert films by various artists, including several Grammy Awards .
In 2018 he filmed the events in the Norwegian black metal scene with Lords of Chaos around the bands Mayhem and Burzum and around the murder of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous in the 1990s.
style
Åkerlund explains that some of his music videos (including “Smack My Bitch Up”) contain violent depictions of violence: “For me, it's always about expressing something as strongly as possible, and when I want to show violence, I do it as violently as I can . "
