The Roundhouse is a famous rock music concert venue in London . It is in the Camden borough near Chalk Farm tube station .

history

The round house takes its name from its previous function: It was built in 1847 as a locomotive shed for the London and North Western Railway . As early as the 1860s, however, it had become too small for the longer locomotives and was then used as a storage room. After the London City Council opened the building for art events in 1966, the opening concert with Pink Floyd took place on October 15 of that year.

All of the most prestigious English psychedelic rock bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s played here : Soft Machine , Led Zeppelin , the Rolling Stones and Man and the early David Bowie . Even America (1970 under the name Daze ) and German groups like Amon Düül and power plant and American groups like the Doors or Jimi Hendrix performed here. After a concert by the Ramones in July 1976, the venue was also considered the birthplace of the English punk movement.

In the Roundhouse not only music concerts were held, but also ballet and theater performances, for example of pieces by the legendary Living Theater and Andy Warhols .

In 1983 the roundhouse was closed. After a long period of vacancy, it was renovated and reopened on June 1, 2006 as a culture and event center. The iTunes Festival has been held here every year since 2009 .
