Acropolis tournament
The Acropolis Tournament is a basketball tournament for national teams and is one of the most prestigious of its kind. The tournament , which is held annually in Greece , is organized by the Greek Basketball Association (EOK) .
history
The Acropolis tournament has been held annually in Athens since 1986 . The only exceptions were in 1991, when FIBA and the Greek Basketball Association held a tournament on the occasion of the centenary of basketball , as well as in 2012 and 2014. Up to now, the venues for the games have been the stadium of peace and friendship in Piraeus , the sports hall in Glyfada and the Olympic Hall in Athens. To date, 28 nations or teams have taken part in the competition, six of which have won the tournament. The previous record winner is the Greek national team , which has already won the tournament 17 times. In three participations so far (1996, 1997, 2005) Germany achieved fourth place.
For the Greek national team, the Acropolis tournament is usually the last tournament before the Olympic Games or European or World Cup in which the selection takes part.
mode
The tournament is reserved for national teams. However, select teams from the American leagues occasionally take part in the competition. In the tournament, four teams always start and play three games in an “everyone against everyone” mode. The leader of the table after the third match day is the winner of the tournament. There was an exception in 1994 when five teams took part in the Acropolis tournament.
Venues
Most often, twelve times, the tournament has so far taken place in the Athens Olympic Hall , which is the largest sports arena in Greece. In second place followed with eight times the “ Stadium of Peace and Friendship ” in Piraeus . The Acropolis tournament was only held three times in the much smaller sports hall in Glyfada in the south of Athens.
