Horsemen is a 2009 psychological thriller directed by Jonas Åkerlund and starring Dennis Quaid .

action

Detective Aidan Breslin struggles to cope with his life, work and the upbringing of his two sons Alex and Sean after his wife's cancer death.

When the teeth of an elderly man are found under a serving cap on the ice surface of a frozen lake, Breslin is called to the scene as a forensic odontologist and entrusted with the case. What is noticeable about the crime scene is that around the lake, four trees, one in each direction, are marked with the words “Come And See” (German: “Come and see”) in red.

A short time later, Mary Anne Spitz's body is found by her adopted daughter Kristin, who hangs in a metal frame for body suspension , whose abdomen was slit and her lungs pierced, so that she ultimately drowned in her own blood. On the walls there are again the same four writings that could be read at the first crime scene. Breslin now has to assume a serial murder and fears further victims.

His fears come true when a third victim, Garrison Jacobs, is found who has been exposed to the same SM practices and whose location shows the well-known lettering.

It becomes clear to Breslin that the scripts found are a quotation from the Bible . It is taken from the Revelation of John in which the horsemen of the Apocalypse are announced. At the same time, the investigating detective succeeds in identifying the manufacturer of the metal frames as a local tattoo artist. He says that he made four metal frames on an anonymous order.

Kristin reports to Breslin and, while walking in the park, confesses to him that she killed her pregnant mother and removed her fetus . So they wanted to punish her father, who sexually about her past has. In their children's room, they find video recordings of the violent deaths of Garrison Jacobs and Mary Anne Spitz.

Although Kristin is in custody, the murders continue. This agrees with the results of the forensic investigation, according to which there were four perpetrators - analogous to the four apocalyptic horsemen.

During his investigation, Breslin discovered that all of the victims were in group therapy with Annette Richardson . Since Breslin's son Alex also sought therapy from Annette Richardson after the death of his mother and Breslin fears that the perpetrators had placed their teeth on the first murder victim to make sure that he was entrusted with the case as a forensic odontologist, he sees his sons next Victims of serial offenders.

Breslin therefore goes directly to Sean's school, only to find out by telephone that his colleague Stingray, who had been sent to Breslin's house, was knocked down there. After taking care of Stingray and calling for medical attention, Breslin enters Alex's room to check on his son. He is not at home, but Breslin is horrified to discover that Alex has not become the victim of a serial offender, but is one of the serial offenders himself.

Breslin sets out to meet his son at the municipal theater, but is anesthetized with an injection and only comes to when his son is injured and hangs in a metal frame. He tells his father that he his suicide via a video camera to the Internet transfers and this is the sign of the online community is to rise up against their families.

Breslin manages to free himself from his handcuffs, detach his son from the metal frame and thus save his life.

background

The film was in the Canadian Winnipeg and Toronto rotated. A re- shoot was done in Chicago . Filming began on 29 January 2007 and ended in March 2007. The budget of the film was 20 million US dollars estimated. The film premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival on May 14, 2008 . In the USA it was shown for the first time in limited cinemas on March 6, 2009, later a further theatrical release was discontinued and - as in Great Britain - a direct-to-video marketing was given preference. In Germany it was shown for the first time in the English original version on March 7, 2009 as part of the Fantasy-Filmfest-Nights 2009 . It was released on DVD in the USA on July 7, 2009, and only subsequently, on August 27, 2009, was it released in German cinemas. The cinema release in Austria was one day later. It grossed over $ 1 million outside of the United States.

The film "Horsemen" is the first Platinum Dunes production that is not a remake of a successful horror film from the 1970s.

The role of Police Chief Krupa was originally occupied by Neal McDonough . After almost a year, a re-shoot was scheduled in Chicago, for which Neal McDonough was not available. Then all the scenes were shot again with him, this time with Chelcie Ross in the role of police chief. In the meantime, Clifton Collins junior had shaved his head and shaved off his beard for other shootings, which is why he was given a wig and a false beard for the subsequent shoot. Despite the extensive work involved in re-shooting, the running time of the DVD is around 20 minutes shorter than the original version.

The DVD of the film was released by Concorde Home Entertainment on February 4, 2010. It was offered in Germany in a limited steelbook edition. The Blu-ray Disc release was made in normal Amaray packaging. The bonus material contains an audio commentary by director Jonas Åkerlund and cinematographer Eric Broms , deleted scenes and the German and US cinema trailers .

During the shooting in Winnipeg , which took place in the middle of the Canadian winter, the film crew was confronted with temperatures as low as −45 degrees Celsius . Filming took place in Winnipeg, Toronto and Chicago, but the original script stipulated that the action was set in Detroit .

Since the director Jonas Åkerlund insisted on producing the film in locations that were as realistic as possible, only two film sets were made for the film. He also planned to use real people for the body suspension scenes, but had to switch to using alternatives from prosthetics in order to protect the safety and health of everyone on the set . After Åkerlund had conversations with several suspension supporters, he toyed with the idea of trying this SM practice for himself.

Ziyi Zhang moved to live with a US host family in New York City to prepare for her role and improve her English language skills. Dennis Quaid's role was inspired by the American poet and writer of Polish-German descent Charles Bukowski . Dennis Quaid had been contracted to spend every weekend in Los Angeles . Quaid made no use of this, however, as he liked it so much on the set that he occasionally even took his wife and band to Winnipeg .

After the first artwork drafts for the film poster arrived from China , showing Dennis Quaid and Ziyi Zhang as a literal interpretation of the film title “Horsemen” on the back of a horse, an intensive discussion broke out about changing the film title to “Come and see”.

For the suspension scene, in which Eric Balfour is prevented from closing his eyes by wires on his eyelids , a nurse was hired whose job it was to keep his eyes from drying out by giving them appropriate fluids.

The quote "Come and see" (German: "Come and see") is taken from the Revelation of John , in which the riders of the Apocalypse are announced.

criticism

Julian Unkel von Filmstarts saw “that Åkerlund adeptly complies with all genre conventions with› The Horsemen ‹. He stages the story in calm, gloomy shots in the style of " Seven ", of course without ever reaching the atmospheric intensity of the model. So ›The Horsemen‹ is a long way from the visually impressive series of images in › Spun ‹; interior shots of bodies at an autopsy , reminiscent of › CSI ‹, are the high point in terms of visual ingenuity. [...] Thanks to a well-done and also surprising twist in the middle section, Callaham suddenly manages to lead the film in a different direction than was to be expected after the formulaic beginning. "Unkel sums up that the film succeeds in" the meanwhile somewhat worn out genre to add some interesting aspects ", but he still suffers" ultimately from an overly conventional staging, clichéd characters and a disappointing resolution. "[...]› The Horsemen ‹is not a bad thriller, but it doesn't bring enough new to it to stand out from the crowd. "

Thorsten Krüger from the editorial team of kino.de said: “The excursion into the ' seven' territory produced by Michael Bay , which is very inclined to horror genre, amazes at first with the renunciation of common stylistic devices, even if the conventional crime and thriller plot is well known to some Has motifs to show, but nevertheless caused a clearly emerging tension curve. [...] In the moral discourse about the depravity of people, the petite Chinese Zhang Ziyi [...] in a diabolical supporting role shines . Patrick Fugit made a memorable, no less powerful appearance. [...] Thus the psychologically cleverly conceived script by Dave Callaham , who after › Doom - The Film ‹ is allowed to show what he can do, provides a couple of good motives that undermine hasty judgments and prepare for the bitter final realization that is not limited to the strong acting Dennis Quaid releases violent emotions. "

The editorial team of Computer Bild advises: "You should definitely have a strong stomach and high resistance to disgust when Åkerlund lets a strong cast ( Lou Taylor Pucci , Peter Stormare , Patrick Fugit ) play perverse games in dizzying horror."
