CSI: Vegas , up to and including season eleven CSI: On the trail of the perpetrators (in Switzerland: CSI - Las Vegas ; Original title: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation ) was an American television series that demonstrated the work of the crime scene group of the criminal investigation department - and crime scene depicts ( English Crime Scene investigation : Crime Scene investigation '). The series is set in Las Vegas and ran in the United States from 2000 to 2015 on CBS . There she achieved the highest ratings. The series is also very popular in Europe.

Executive producers of the series are Jerry Bruckheimer and William Petersen . Most of the episodes were shot in Los Angeles and only two to three episodes per season in Las Vegas. After 15 seasons and 335 episodes, the series ended on September 27, 2015 with a two-hour television film. In this, the former leading actors William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger returned in their old roles.

The series has three offshoots , the first two played in Miami (2002–2012) and New York (2004–2013), the third deals with the Cyber Crime Division (2015–2016) of the FBI . If only CSI or C. S. I. is mentioned, the first series is meant.

concept

The starting point of an episode is usually a death, which is usually followed by another crime. The crime scene group splits up to investigate both cases. The four CSI series are based on the Whodunit principle (perpetrator unknown), with genetic engineering being of great help to the criminalists. In almost all episodes of the series, two or more murders are investigated in parallel and, as a rule, also solved. This differentiates them from actual police work, where cases are not solved in the forensic departments. Occasionally two cases are related and investigative groups need to work together to identify the perpetrator (s). The members of the CSI team work independently of each other under the direction of their superior, who uses them according to their special skills.

Characteristics

Visual stylistic devices

One of the stylistic devices of the CSI series is the visual implementation of the securing of traces and evidence down to the microscopic smallest detail. A visual effect is e.g. B. the representation of a ball that flies through space in slow motion, or the behavior of human tissue at cell level under certain conditions. The company Zoic Studios is responsible for the visual effects , which is also used in other television productions such as B. Firefly or Buffy - Under the Vampire Slayer . DVD publications reveal that for reasons of cost and time, CGI effects are often not generated, but enlarged models of blood vessels, bones and the like are used, in which a camera is used in time lapse, e.g. B. simulates the trajectory.

music

The background music ("off-music") consists entirely of modern, non-symphonic timbres and rhythmic elements of the rock, pop and techno genre. As with other television productions by Jerry Bruckheimer , there was a consequent departure from a symphonic or orchestral dominated film music consisting of strings, wind instruments, choral singing and piano. The song Who Are You was re-recorded as opening music by the rock band The Who .

References to reality

For the most part, the series does not correspond to reality. The real crime scene investigators only examine the crime scene for traces and reconstruct the course of events. They do not conduct investigations, interrogations, arrests and accesses , work in the laboratory or follow the case to the end as in the series . It is only in some areas of the United States that a CSI investigator presents the forensic material in court.

An article in the Welsh Western Mail by Darren Devine on July 20, 2006 was titled "Science is Cool Again (and it owes it all to CSI )". It says, among other things:

“In the late 1980s, LA Law produced a whole generation of would-be lawyers influenced by the vision of winning over juries with their passionate eloquence . Now it appears that novel series like coroner Dr. Leo Dalton , Waking the Dead, and CSI have the same effect on the number of students applying for a science subject at universities. The latest figures from Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) show that there has been a more than four percent increase in the number of students who want to take courses in chemistry, medicine, biology and agriculture. "

According to an interview with American actor William Petersen , his role in CSI, Gil Grissom, was named after Gus Grissom . Originally the character was supposed to be called Gil Scheinbaum.

The series has been repeatedly criticized for portraying sexual minorities in clichéd stereotypes.
