Firefly - The departure of the Serenity , original title Firefly ( "Fireflies"), is a US - television series by Joss Whedon that on the US in 2002 and 2003, television station Fox aired. It is about the experiences of the crew of the small, independent transport spaceship Serenity (English "serenity", "peace of mind"), who tries to survive in the remote settlements of mankind in space through small transport orders and trickery . Since there is relatively little mechanization in these areas, human and animal labor is used there - the conditions are similar to the states of the west of the USA during the settler times shown in Westerns . Firefly is a space western , a mix of genres from science fiction and westerns.

The series was withdrawn after the broadcast of 11 episodes, although 14 episodes had been produced. Due to very good DVD sales, however, a movie based on the series called Serenity - Escape into New Worlds was produced, which was released in cinemas worldwide in late 2005. The German-language DVD package was released on November 14, 2005 - just in time for the German theatrical release of Serenity at the end of November. The German-language DVD of the movie Serenity was released on March 2, 2006. The series was broadcast on Super RTL from September 12, 2009 .

production

The actors at the Serenity Flanvention 2005: Adam Baldwin , Ron Glass , Summer Glau , Alan Tudyk , Sean Maher , Jewel Staite , Morena Baccarin and Nathan Fillion

Prior to 2002, had Joss Whedon with Buffy and Angel created two running successfully on small Networks television series and received critical acclaim over the years and good ratings. Therefore, he was hired by the US television station Fox to design a new series . His design was a science fiction series with strong western elements, but without the aliens that were usually brought in .

Whedon's first draft of a pilot film met with little approval from the broadcasters. Although the concept of the series was accepted, they wanted a more action-packed introduction. As a result, there were further different views about the series between the creative and the broadcaster. The ratings also did not meet the station's expectations. So it came about that 14 episodes were produced, but the broadcasting was stopped after 11 episodes.

Shortly afterwards, all 14 episodes were released as a DVD set. Since Firefly could always count on a committed, albeit small, fan base, the DVDs sold above average (200,000 copies were delivered during the first four months of sales). This in turn meant that Joss Whedon was able to sell a film idea based on Firefly to Universal Studios. The film Serenity - Escape to New Worlds was shown in September 2005 in the USA and Great Britain and in November 2005 in Germany. In Germany it was released on DVD in March 2006.

Background world

Alliance planetary system
Flag of alliance

Firefly takes place at the beginning of the 26th century: After humanity continued to multiply and use up the earth's resources, it set off into space with generational spaceships and reached another planetary system . Its dozen of worlds and hundreds of moons have been made habitable and colonized by terraforming . The first colonized and central planets are already highly engineered and highly developed, while the outer worlds and moons are still in a state of construction.

The strongly controlling state power, the so-called Alliance (Allied Planets) , waged a victorious war of unification against the independent worlds six years before the main story began. In the course of this war, the fighters of the independent worlds (also known as Browncoats because of their clothing ) were finally defeated in the Battle of Serenity Valley on the planet Hera (an obvious reference to the American Civil War ). Nevertheless, despite the victory of the Alliance, the outer worlds are only under limited control by the government troops, and conditions often prevail there as in the wild west of the American pioneering days . In many places there are local rulers who, with the help of a few armed men, control entire communities and areas. In spite of the highly developed technology, not all people live in prosperity either.

Relatively little is said in the series about the details of the alliance and its territory; in the movie Serenity it is mentioned that a parliament exists. Overall, the alliance is a mixture of an authoritarian system and a democracy: Joss Whedon said that the losers in particular see the alliance as something ominous, while objectively it is not a totalitarian system. However, the alliance is definitely a system of government that uses drastic means to achieve its goals. The appearance of alliance members corresponds to the style and characteristics.

In fact, the term science fiction western hits exactly the core aspect of the series. The only way out and possibility for those who do not want to come to terms with the alliance is to switch to the peripheral worlds. This tactic is chosen by the protagonist of the series, Malcolm Reynolds, who fought on the losing side in the War of Independence and who was particularly influenced by the Battle of Serenity Valley.

The upper class of society, even on the central planets, is also reminiscent of the American founding days: honor duels (see also satisfaction ) are allowed, social prestige is very important. There is also a socially very respected, state-tolerated courtesan system ( Companions ), which has its own structure.

The alliance seems to be bilingual: English and Chinese, whereby in everyday language a unified language seems to have formed from the various language areas of the "earth of yore". Alarm messages from the Serenity's on-board computer are also issued in English and Chinese. Also culturally strong Asian influences are recognizable. Many characters wear kimonos, and many trading posts offer mainly Asian food.

There are also influential corporations, the best-known being the multicompany Blue Sun Corporation , which apparently exerts influence on large parts of the Alliance government.

Serenity

The Serenity is a small, actually outdated, Firefly- class transport ship . It got its ship class name ( Firefly ) from the drive attached to the stern, which gives it the appearance of a firefly. The name Serenity comes from the battle of Serenity Valley on Hera, in which Zoë and Malcolm fought for the Browncoats. The Serenity can be controlled by a single pilot from the cockpit, but there is also a seat for a co-pilot. On board there is a large hold with a loading ramp, an infirmary, separate crew quarters and a ship's mess with galley, which also serves as a lounge. The Serenity has no armament. The ship has two shuttles that can be used as additional living space.

The equipment of the Serenity also underlines the classification of the series as a science fiction western. For example, there is a large wooden table in the exhibition center where the crew gathers for dinner. Despite the narrow space, the individual cabins for the crew members are very personal, and ship engineer Kaylee has installed a hammock in the engine room.

The Reaver

Reavers look human, but they mutilate themselves. They are cannibals who “unspeakable atrocities” on their victims before killing them. People who observe these incidents tend to go insane and become reavers themselves. The Alliance denies the existence of the Reaver, most people consider it a legend. Their origins are revealed in the movie: The Reavers are people who have been psychologically manipulated by a chemical substance called Pax . This chemical was used on the planet "Miranda" to take away people's aggression. However, in 99.9 percent of people it not only led to the desired peacefulness, but to absolute inactivity and thus to death, and in the remaining 0.1 percent (incorrectly translated as ten percent in the German dubbing), about 30,000 people extreme aggressiveness, from which the Reaver resulted.

people

Regular crew

  • Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds fought on the loser's side in the Unification War six years ago. After their surrender, he bought the Serenity . With regard to his crew, he has the undisputed claim to leadership - but also the unconditional loyalty - of a military leader. In order to keep the crew of the Serenity financially afloat, he uses small transport jobs. He also carries out smuggling and theft, but follows his own morals . He is good at handling various weapons, but also a strong opponent in close combat. Although Reynolds is always cynical, the truth is that he is a gentleman . He is proud of his fight in the war. Every year on Unification Day, the day when the Alliance defeated the outer planets in the battle of the Serenity Valley, he finds an alliance-friendly bar where he “wants to have a drink in peace”. Unfortunately, every time there is inexplicably a fight.
  • Zoë Washburne (née Alleyne) fought in the war under Malcolm Reynolds and then joined him. She is the captain's right-hand man and the best soldier he has ever fought alongside. As a career soldier, she is familiar with handling weapons and is not afraid of physical confrontations. She met her husband on board.
  • Hoban "Wash" Washburne is the pilot of the Serenity . After he hired, he and Zoë got married. Wash is a prankster and, although vigorous, is physically inferior to his wife. In addition, he lacks his wife's determination in conflict situations. However, his skills as a pilot are remarkable.
  • Jayne Cobb is a mercenary . His worldview is structured quite simply and is based on the law of the strongest. Only in exchange for financial security is he willing to submit to others. He is smart enough to recognize that he would not get very far on his own, and therefore mostly subordinates himself to a command. Jayne is physically fit and has an extensive weapon collection. He named his favorite weapon "Vera", which can be seen several times in action. In principle, he follows a simple code of ethics , which he is willing to push aside in dangerous situations or for appropriate remuneration. Even if he often has arguments with the captain, he stands by his side in fights. However, his loyalty in general can be questioned and is often put to a severe test.
  • Kaywinnit Lee "Kaylee" Frye is the ship mechanic . She has an emotional bond with "her" ship and is bursting with joie de vivre. Although she has no formal training, she has an exceptional talent for handling machines and almost always manages to keep the Serenity going with ease. She embodies a typical "country egg", loves fresh fruit and especially strawberries. A beginning romance with the ship's doctor Simon Tam is indicated.

The permanent ship guests

  • Inara Serra is a registered companion - a socially high-ranking courtesan with a correspondingly well-founded education. She has rented the Serenity's starboard shuttle on a permanent basis . She has free choice about her clients who have to apply to her. Inara feels drawn to Malcolm, but due to his lack of understanding of her job, there is always friction between the two - which is also due to the fact that Malcolm is also drawn to her.
  • River Tam is a very gifted girl. So gifted that she was offered a scholarship from a mysterious and largely unknown Allianz academy , which she accepted. There, however, she was apparently the subject of extensive mental testing and brain surgery. At the beginning of the plot she is very disturbed and barely able to participate in normal life. She has exceptional mental and physical abilities, as shown in the course of the plot and in the movie.
  • Dr. Simon Tam is River's older brother and a gifted doctor. River managed to get him encrypted messages from the Academy . After two years he was able to free River through a rescue operation financed by him. He used up a considerable part of his fortune in the process, and he has been on the official wanted list of the Alliance since River's liberation . Simon is well-bred and rather stiff around the Serenity , which often causes teasing from the rest of the crew. He is now working as an on-board doctor against board and lodging for himself and his sister. Since he was the chief physician in trauma surgery, his help is often very welcome.
  • Shepherd Derrial Book is a Christian clergyman . After a long time in a religious house , he decided to go on a missionary trip . Shepherd (literally translated: Shepherd ) is (with reference to e.g. Psalm 23 ) an English expression for a pastor (the word "pastor" literally means "shepherd") or generally a Christian clergyman. On the trip, however, he is very cautious about missionaries. Occurrences suggest that there is much more to him than a simple clergyman, because he has military knowledge, is trained in the use of weapons and has information about internals of the Alliance. In the episode In the Last Second , a special importance of his person for the alliance is indicated when he gets the medical care of an alliance spaceship with the help of his ID card.

Recurring minor characters

Some characters appear in several episodes, so they are more important for the plot than other secondary characters:

  • Badger , played by Mark Sheppard , is a smuggler and crook on the moon Persephone. Malcolm acts more or less willingly with him every now and then. Badger appears in the title episode Serenity and in The Duel . In the original English version he speaks a pronounced London East-End dialect.
  • Adelei Niska , played by Michael Fairman , is the owner of a space station and an underworld boss who prefers to use torture. He appears in Dirty Shops and In the Clutches of Shanyou , where he tortures Malcolm for hours until he is rescued by his crew.
  • " Saffron ", played by Christina Hendricks , is a former companion and appears in two episodes under the names "Bridget" and "Yolanda". She seduces her victims in order to achieve her goals (robbery and theft). She appears in the episodes Mrs. Reynolds and Antiques Heist .

action

The series does not follow a larger storyline. During the episodes produced, rather small stories happen, which on the one hand develop the social structure within the crew of the Serenity and on the other hand introduce the Firefly universe.

Still, there is a leitmotif that becomes more prominent as the story progresses and that is eventually resolved in the film: Simon tries to stabilize River's state of mind. While he succeeds in this, it becomes clear that search parties sent by the Alliance are trying to "catch" River again. More or less complicated romances are developing between Simon and Kaylee and between Inara and Mal. "Shepherd" Book stands out in several instances for its military knowledge and knowledge of resources that should not be available to a secluded clergyman, and that suggest a complex (and dark) past for the character. Since the series was canceled after one season, essential questions about the background of the characters are not clarified. The film Serenity - Escape into New Worlds , which takes place after the events of the series, clarifies some details about Rivers and Simon's background. However, the story of Books in particular remains in the dark. The emerging romances within the crew are also only incompletely clarified.

Episode list

The pilot Serenity was replaced at the television premiere on September 20, 2002 on FOX by The Train Job , because the station thought the actual pilot was unsuitable. The pilot was then shown as the last episode before the shot. Episodes 11 ( theft of antiques ), 12 ( The Embassy ) and 13 ( Light Girls ) were not broadcast until a year later. The 14 episodes in the originally planned order:

Stylistic devices

  • In the case of exterior shots of spaceships, although they are computer animations, unfocused and slightly “shaky” images are used - comparable to a camera trying to capture a moving object. These "outside recordings" in space have no sound, but were always accompanied by music, which means that this phenomenon is not clearly visible. In other science fiction series, such scenes often contain background noises typical of ships, such as engines and generators. Realistically, space is silent because there is no carrier medium for sound (such as air). The serenity's entry into the atmosphere of a planet at the beginning of the film is rightly associated with noise. In the film Serenity - Escape into New Worlds , this representation of the universe was partially no longer used.
  • According to the theme of the series, the music is largely dominated by western-style music. Asian sound painting is rarely used. The background music is usually kept quiet. Xylophone sounds are used in sentimental situations .
  • The bilingual nature of the Firefly universe is often illustrated by the fact that the characters switch to Chinese in scenes with obvious expletives. Some control elements, buttons and display symbols are also labeled with Chinese symbols. Acoustic messages, such as those from computers or machines, are often also issued in two languages, for example alarm messages.
  • The series also lives from the puns and word battles of the characters. The choice of words is sometimes very coarse and clear without much consideration for political correctness .

criticism

“With heart, humor and shirt sleeves, 'Firefly' kicked a tired genre in the ass. While at the same time the new 'Star Wars' trilogy was rolling through space and the 'Star Trek' franchise was dawning as a debating club, Whedon threw the ballast of pseudo-mythical to state-wise science fiction overboard. Similar to how the New Hollywood Westerns of the 1970s reinterpreted and reinterpreted their tradition, 'Firefly' brought dirt, pain, passion and love into science fiction. "

Trivia

  • In the pilot film Serenity , you can see the logo of the Weyland-Yutani group known from the Alien series on the monitor of the anti-aircraft gun Reynolds is shooting with .
  • In the pilot film Serenity : While Inara reaches the Serenity with her shuttle, a Lambda-Class shuttle from Star Wars can be seen starting in the background at the top left .
  • In the pilot film Serenity : After the Serenity escapes the reavers with a certain maneuver, you can see that the pilot Wash just pretends to be holding a steering wheel.
  • In the pilot film Serenity , in episode 2 Dirty Businesses and in episode 9 Bad Game , Jayne Cobb has a jacket from the Rhineland-Palatinate police with a patch on the left sleeve and a badge of rank on the shoulders.
  • At the beginning of episode 2, Dirty Shops, during the scene in the bar, Jayne Cobb is wearing National People's Army trousers with a camouflage pattern .
  • In episode 2, Dirty Shops , a spaceship that looks like an American space shuttle is docked at the Skyplex .
  • In episode 2, Dirty Shops , the registration number of the target car is "A: 1138". This can be seen as an allusion to both the number 1138 (see for example THX 1138 ), which is often used in George Lucas ' films, and the "A-113" designation that is often seen in Pixar films.
  • In episode 9 Wrong Game , the LCARS menu system from Starship Enterprise: The Next Century is briefly shown on the console .
  • In episode 9, Wrong Game , a Russian Mi-24 “Hind” is used as an “ambulance”. In Russia , this type is really used as a rescue helicopter. When its wreck is in the junkyard, Wash throws the part against it, which in episode 8 had to be replaced on the drive of the Serenity. In addition, as in the rest of the series, many parts of airplanes from our present can be seen in the junkyard.
  • In episode 9, Wrong Game , commercial roof boxes from automobile accessories are used as coffins to smuggle Simon and River into the hospital.
  • Resulted in 11 Antiques prey flying in the background a Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" by.
  • Resulted in 11 Antiques prey can be seen for a short time Windows 2000 on the screen of a dumpster.
  • The name of the service Google Wave refers to the series. In the English-language original, electronic communication, which often includes video transmission, is referred to as a wave . During the presentation of Google Wave, some references to the series were recognizable, including the developer Lars Rasmussen, who replied to a message with the word "shiny", which is used in the series to express enthusiasm or amazement. Another indication is the crash message “Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!”. The phrase comes from the character Wash from Serenity when he is playing with dinosaurs.
  • In episode 12, The Message , you can see Kaylee's room in the background when she again listens to the message from Zoë and Mal's former friend, a model of Han Solo from Star Wars, frozen in carbonite .
  • In episode 14 The Bounty Hunter , a Marines combat helmet from the Space 2063 series is shown in a close-up between the 25th and 26th minutes .
  • The "Browncoats" use the HK G36 assault rifle during the War of Independence and wear helmets that are similar to those of the US armed forces from World War II, while the Alliance soldiers wear helmets similar to those of the Wehrmacht . The Allianz soldiers wear body armor that was used in the movie Starship Troopers . Only a few colored areas were added.
  • The only cruisers of the Alliance known by name are called "Dortmunder" and "Magellan".
  • There are several references to Firefly in the series " Castle ", in which Nathan Fillion has a leading role . In one episode, Nathan Fillion wears his uniform from Firefly on Halloween , whereupon he is asked if he had not already worn the costume 5 years ago. In another episode, Nathan Fillion speaks Chinese. When asked where he could do it from, he said: “From a series that I really like.” Chinese is one of the standard languages in Firefly . In an episode (5-06) in which a convention resolves a murder in a re-enacted science fiction series whose fan is his series partner, Castle emphasizes that he is instead a fan of good science fiction like "the Joss- Whedon Series ”.
  • The series The Big Bang Theory alludes to the series and its short duration. In season 2, episode 17, Summer Glau made a guest appearance as herself. In the episode, in addition to her role in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, when talking to Rajesh Koothrappali about constellations, her role in Firefly is also discussed by mentioning that she had to be familiar with it, since she had already been to space in Firefly . In season 3, episode 15, Rupert Murdoch is compared to Darth Vader for quitting Firefly . In the same season, episode 22, in a flashback episode with his roommate, Sheldon Cooper agreed to watch Firefly every Friday and urged that this be done early because the series would be aired for years to come. In another episode he explains that Rupert Murdoch is on his list of mortal enemies, also because of the dismissal. In season 5, episode 21, it is explained that Sheldon only begged three times in his life. One of these times was at the FOX station so that Firefly would n't be dropped. The early cancellation is also mentioned again in season 6, episode 21. Nathan Fillion made a guest appearance in episode 15 of season eight.
  • In the pilot of the Battlestar Galactica series, a short scene shows various spaceships flying over the planet Caprica through the windows when the figure of President Laura Roslin visits a doctor's office. Among other things, the Serenity is one of these spaceships.
  • There are several sound references (including those from Joss Whedon himself), but no official confirmation that Firefly is based on the SF role-playing game Traveler .
  • Several pen and paper role-playing games and a board game have been released based on Firefly and the accompanying film Serenity .
  • In both the book and the movie Ready Player One , a Firefly is the command ship of Wade Watts / Parzival
