Summer Lyn Glau (born July 24, 1981 in San Antonio , Texas ) is an American dancer and actress . She gained worldwide fame through her role as River Tam in the television series Firefly - The Dawn of the Serenity and the film based on it, Serenity - Escape into New Worlds .

Career

Summer Glau was born in San Antonio in 1981, the first of three daughters. Her Irish-Scottish mother is a teacher and her German father is a building contractor. She received intensive ballet lessons from an early age . The tight schedule made school impossible, so her mother gave her home tuition.

At the age of twelve, Glau began her career as a professional dancer until an injury forced her to take a break. During this time she got her first acting role while visiting friends in Los Angeles . Shortly thereafter, she decided to move to Los Angeles and work as an actress and dancer there.

After various appearances in commercials, Glau got her first TV role in 2002 in the series Angel - Hunter of Darkness , in which she was able to demonstrate her ballet skills. Impressed by her talent, angel producer Joss Whedon put her in a leading role in his new series Firefly - The Serenity Break , but the series was discontinued after 11 out of 14 episodes were filmed.

After the end of Firefly , she made appearances in the television series CSI: On the trail of the perpetrators , Cold Case - No victim is ever forgotten and 4400 - The returnees . Her next bigger roles she played in the science fiction films Serenity - Escape in New Worlds (2005) and Mammut (2006).

In 2005 she was voted best actress of the year by readers of the British science fiction magazine SFX for her role in Serenity . In 2006 she received the Saturn Award for the same role .

In 2008 and 2009 Glau was seen in the series version of the Terminator saga Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as the female Terminator Cameron . In 2008 she received the Saturn Award again for this role.

Private life

Glau is active in several non-profit organizations, such as BC Women's Hospital & Health Center . She has been a vegetarian since 1995 and supports several organizations that campaign for animal rights.

In January 2015, Summer Glau and her husband Val Morrison had their first child. She gave birth to her second child in October 2017.
