Gina Torres
Gina Torres (born April 25, 1969 in Manhattan , New York City ) is an American film and television actress who has appeared in several successful television series in recent years .
Life
Torres' family is from Cuba . She grew up in the Bronx and attended the prestigious High School of Music and Art in New York, where she was trained as a mezzo-soprano . Since she could not afford to attend college , she kept herself afloat with various acting jobs. In 1992 she had her first notable television role in the series Law & Order , in which she reappeared three years later, albeit in a different role. She also had several roles in the soap opera Love, Lies, Passion , in which her later Firefly colleague Nathan Fillion also took part.
In 1994 she was in the Broadway - musical The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public to see.
This was followed by various guest appearances in series such as NYPD Blue , Dark Angel , Profiler and Xena - The Warrior Princess . From 1997 she was seen in the role of Nebula in a total of eight episodes of Hercules . In 1998 she played the lesbian hostile agent Jenna Vogler in the television series Nikita in the episode The Living Bomb ( Open Heart ).
After her first own series Cleopatra 2525 flopped, she took on the second series lead role in 2001 in Joss Whedon's Firefly - The Dawn of the Serenity and played a role for the first time in Alias - The Agent , which she took over again for several episodes in 2005 and 2006. Whedon also engaged her for the fourth season of Angel , where she was the main antagonist of Angels as the demon goddess Jasmine .
After further guest appearances in The Guardian - Savior with Heart , CSI , The Shield - Law of Violence , Without a Trace - Vanished without a trace and several episodes of the hit series 24 , she played a leading role again in 2006 as head of a hostage-taking team in the Standoff series .
After that she appeared again in numerous television series in guest roles, including in Boston Legal , Bones - The Bone Hunter , Criminal Minds , Eli Stone , Dirty Sexy Money , Pushing Daisies , The Unit - A Question of Honor , Drop Dead Diva , FlashForward , Gossip Girl and the Vampire Diaries .
After she had received minor supporting roles in the movies Das Rosenbett and The Substance of Fire in 1996 , her film career rested for the time being. Only since her supporting role in the two Matrix - sequels The Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions (both 2003) she is seen regularly in cinema productions. In 2005 she got her first leading role in a film in Serenity - Escape into New Worlds . This was followed by a supporting role in the thriller Five Fingers (2006) at the side of her husband Laurence Fishburne . She got another leading role in 2007 in the comedy I think I love my wife with Chris Rock . She then starred in the drama Don't Let Me Drown , which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. In the same year she played the role of Marlena in the action film Into the Blue 2 - The Golden Reef . From 2011 to 2018 she starred as Jessica Pearson in the law series Suits . In the sixth season, she left the series. During the seventh season she had guest appearances again and in 2019 a season of Pearson was created as a spin-off .
On September 20, 2002, she married Laurence Fishburne . Their daughter was born in the summer of 2007. In September 2017, the couple announced the split.
