Gina Torres (born April 25, 1969 in Manhattan , New York City ) is an American film and television actress who has appeared in several successful television series in recent years .

Life

Torres' family is from Cuba . She grew up in the Bronx and attended the prestigious High School of Music and Art in New York, where she was trained as a mezzo-soprano . Since she could not afford to attend college , she kept herself afloat with various acting jobs. In 1992 she had her first notable television role in the series Law & Order , in which she reappeared three years later, albeit in a different role.
