Westworld is an American science fiction - Western - television series by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy based on the eponymous film by Michael Crichton from 1973 is based. Executive producers on the series include JJ Abrams , Bryan Burk and Jerry Weintraub . Since it was first broadcast on October 2, 2016, the program has been broadcast in the United States on the cable channel HBO and is also available in the original with German subtitles via Sky On Demand , Sky Go and Sky Ticket . The German-language first broadcast began on February 2, 2017 on Sky Atlantic HD .
In November 2016, HBO ordered a ten-part second season, which had been broadcast since April 22, 2018 and could be seen in German on Sky Atlantic HD the following day. The reason for the long waiting time was the complex production of the series. On May 1, 2018, the production of a third season was officially announced and will begin airing on HBO on March 15, 2020. Before the third season ended, HBO extended the series to include a fourth season in April 2020.
action
The series is about a futuristic amusement park in which guests can play stories of the Wild West with the help of human-like robots ( hosts ), such as bank robberies, prospecting for gold, or have fun with the prostitutes in the saloon. The firearms in the park area are modified in such a way that the hosts can be damaged while the guests are not seriously injured. Defective hosts are repaired by engineers at night and the memory memories are reset.
The plot of the first season can be roughly divided into three storylines on different time levels. All of the storylines also revolve around the question of whether the hosts have become conscious, but that question remains open. A largely chronological sequence of the storylines is reproduced below.
Power struggles in the board
One of the two founders, Arnold Weber, tries to help the hosts to become conscious and develops a labyrinth for this. When the host Dolores reaches the center, he believes that he has found evidence of awareness before the park opens and wants to prevent the park from opening. After all, existence in the park would be associated with great agony for hosts with awareness. The other founder, Dr. Robert Ford is against it. Arnold has himself and the other hosts shot by the host Dolores in order to prevent the opening - in vain. Many years later, Ford developed a host with special skills in the image of Arnold and called him Bernard; Bernard becomes head of the park's behavior department .
In the current timeline, there is tension between the company's board of directors and Ford, as well as the Quality Assurance, Storylines, and Conduct departments. The head of quality assurance , Theresa, smuggled secret data out of the system. Ford hires Bernard to kill her. He later gets Bernard to kill himself.
the maze
Logan, the son of the Delos company founder, who acquired shares in Westworld, is on vacation at the facility shortly after it opens with his future brother-in-law William. At first he is rather reserved and doesn't think much of the wild west life and the use of firearms. When he gets to know and love the host Dolores, and Logan's antics annoy him, he takes a liking to the park. Dolores is kidnapped and William sets out to find her. He wants to find out the last secrets of the park.
Years later with many park visits, William is majority owner of Delos and again in the park and appears as a mysterious man dressed in black. He is looking for the center of the maze, a hidden game in the park. He receives help from the hosts in various threads. In an abandoned village he finally meets Dolores and Ford, who explain to him that they have achieved his goal, even if the labyrinth was not created for guests. William is furious when the end of the maze does not satisfy him. He is disappointed that Dolores has been reset after each visit and wants the hosts to fight back.
Escape and rebellion
The prostitute Maeve can remember past events again and again, despite the memory deletion, for example that she had a daughter in an earlier storyline and was killed by the Man in Black. She blackmails the technician Felix to explain her situation and the facility. She uses tricks to force him to adapt her character traits according to her will, which makes her more independent. She can now influence other hosts and is planning an escape. To do this, she recruits crook hosts who break out with deadly weapons and learns from Bernard that she did not do this of her own free will, but that her programming had been adjusted. Maeve can bypass the security against an escape of the hosts, but - contrary to the new programming - does not take the train into human civilization. At the same time, Dolores shoots Dr. Ford, and many of the guests present, are killed by hosts.
Cast and dubbing
The German-language synchronization of the series is carried out by Interopa Film in Berlin under the dialogue script and dialogue direction by Jürgen Wilhelm, with Robert Golling working on the book.

production
development
On August 31, 2013, HBO announced that it had ordered a pilot episode for a potential television series based on the film Westworld . This was produced by Jonathan Nolan , who wrote the script with Lisa Joy. Nolan, Joy, JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk also served as executive producers.
The broadcast was originally planned for 2015. Due to multiple production difficulties, the broadcast was postponed to autumn 2016.
Filming
Early on, showrunner Nolan and cinematographer Paul Cameron decided that the series should be shot on 35mm film , although it was becoming increasingly difficult to acquire motion picture film from the remaining producers. For a softer image, the filmmakers used Arri / Zeiss Master Prime lenses, the coatings of which were removed. The series was mainly on footage of Kodak turned that of FotoKem in Burbank edited and Encore Hollywood has been scanned to digital intermediates to create all takes, which are suitable as dailies. The final cut was in 2K - JPEG as -Digitalformat to HBO for broadcasting and Warner Bros. average negative supplied for archiving.
Since much of the series is shown from the hosts' point of view, steadicams were used for the entire first season, with the exception of a few scenes in the final episode where a handheld camera aesthetic was used as a metaphor for hosts breaking out of their programming and volunteering acted.
The 22-day filming for the pilot episode of the series took place in and around Los Angeles and Moab , Utah , in August 2014 . Filming locations in California included various soundstages and backlots at Universal Studios and Warner Bros. , Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains , Melody Ranch in Santa Clarita , the Skirball Cultural Center and Convention Center in Los Angeles and Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood . The Melody Ranch set for the town of Sweetwater had previously been used for many westerns such as Django Unchained (2012) and The Magnificent Seven (2016), but was significantly upgraded for Westworld by production designer Zack Grobler to create an idealized version of the so-called Wild West to represent.
Green screens (Engl. Green screens ) were placed around the sets in California around to modern construction and infrastructure to cover such as parking lots, so the recordings in California later digitally with outdoor scenes from Utah could be merged. For scenes showing the arrival of the guests in Sweetwater, the filmmakers from the Fillmore and Western Railway (F&W) arranged a steam locomotive that was originally built for the feature film Lone Ranger (2013). F&W also supplied a few hundred meters of track on which the train could be placed and then pushed into the Sweetwater set by a railcar. The scenes in the underground laboratory levels of the Westworld Operations Center were filmed on a soundstage at Melody Ranch . The laboratory consists mainly of glass walls, so the crew had to be careful not to hit the glass panes on the dark sets, and they had to repeatedly identify and prevent unwanted reflections. The Dead Mall Hawthorne Plaza was used for the filming of the cold store level, stored in the disused hosts.
For the large-format landscape shots, the producers were inspired by the American director John Ford (1894–1973), who shot four of his westerns in Castle Valley east of Moab. In early 2014, Nolan toured southern Utah with crew members and a location scout to explore useful locations, and was thrilled by the landscape. Most of Utah's locations, like Dead Horse Point State Park , were strictly walk-in areas, where both the cast and crew had to carry all their gear in and out. Most of the riding scenes were shot on a private ranch, where the filmmakers were less restricted than when shooting on public land. To seamlessly blend the California sets with those from Utah, greenscreens were brought to Utah, where they were used to film rear angles of scenes originally filmed in California. For example, conversations were filmed on the outside balcony of the Westworld Operations Center on a balcony facing the center of the Skirball Center, then opposite angles were shot over the shoulders of the cast at Dead Horse Point , making it appear as if the Operations Center was on the steep cliffs of the state park . The interior scenes of the train were created by assembling a passenger car on the trailer of a flat bed truck traveling on Utah State Route 128 .
The 3D printing of hosts in the intro was created almost exclusively with classic effects, some of which were digitally revised by the visual effects team. The actors used authentic percussion revolvers like the Colt Single Action Army , LeMat 1861 , Remington 1866 Derringer, and forearm bolt action rifles like the Winchester Model 1873 . Out of respect for the actors and extras involved, nude recordings were made on a closed stage and doubles were used for sex scenes.
music
The German-Iranian composer Ramin Djawadi , who had previously worked with Nolan on the TV series Person of Interest , composed the score for Westworld . The main musical theme combines bass lines, light arpeggios and melodies that complete the idea of an amusement park. The soundtrack for the first season was released on December 5, 2016.
Commenting on the adaptation of contemporary songs in the series, the composer said, “The show has an inherently anachronistic feel to it, it's a western theme park and yet it has robots in it, so why not use modern songs? And that's a metaphor in itself, wrapped in the overall theme of the show, ”but he emphasized that Nolan had the idea.
The newly interpreted piano and string pieces in Westworld include the four songs No Surprises , Fake Plastic Trees , Motion Picture Soundtrack and Exit Music (For a Film) by Radiohead . Other pieces include Black Hole Sun by the grunge band Soundgarden , Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones , Pineapple Rag and Peacherine Rag by ragtime composer Scott Joplin (between 1867 and 1868–1917), Reverie L.68 by Claude Debussy , A Forest by the gothic band The Cure , The House of the Rising Sun in the version by The Animals , Back to Black by Amy Winehouse and Something I Can Never Have by Nine Inch Nails .

reception
After Nina Jerzy of n-tv is the success formula of Westworld " Game of Thrones plus Terminator plus Lost ," it'll recipe for success Game of Thrones into the genre of science fiction transferred and to "life-like robots and a profound mythology between God complex and critique of capitalism expands ". In the opinion of Erik Kain in the US business magazine Forbes , the world of Westworld is “the ultimate escapism , tailor-made for every kind of fantasy, no matter how depraved it may be. It's video games and pornography, virtual reality and escapist fantasy rolled into one. "Westworld goes much further than Grand Theft Auto V , and it's" scary because you have to wonder what you would do if you ever had the chance to visit such a world, devoid of consequences and morals ”. Karoline Meta Beisel from the Süddeutsche Zeitung associates the loops of the robots, which are repeatedly "patched", "deleted" and "restarted", with the feature film Groundhog Day . At Comic Con in New York, screenwriters Jonathan Nolan and his wife Lisa Joy named the three open-world computer games Grand Theft Auto , Red Dead Redemption and BioShock, as well as concepts that computer game developers use, as further sources of inspiration in addition to the original Crichton film Program non-player characters (NPC) because they “don't just recite dialogues” (“don't just recite dialogue”).
Reviews
January Schlüter praises on Quotenmeter.de the imagery she was "perfectly ambivalent, with cool, dark, confined spaces in the laboratories and welcoming beautiful landscapes in the American West. Actually, we experience the highest level, simply through the challenging portrayal of the robots, who can suddenly change their facial expressions or completely stop their functions. "
“The complexity of the novel-like plot and the intellectuality of the negotiated questions lifts 'Westworld' above comparable current series [...] With all the philosophical drama, however, there is also some macabre fun. Western fans will find numerous quotes from genre classics, above all and again and again ' Play me the song of death '. And in the saloon, which also doubles as a brothel, there is a constantly clinking pianola , which, however, does not play entertainment music from the 19th century, but rather ' Black Hole Sun ' or ' Paint It Black '. Whatever androids dream of - harmless electric sheep are definitely not. "
"While Crichton's film was a kind of preliminary study for Jurassic Park , the new Westworld is more closely related to the Matrix films : it is not the Neil Postman- esque question of what our addiction to pleasure does to us that worries the creators of the series, but the question what can be called reality in the virtual age. A robot fable for the age of Oculus Rift . Westworld no longer warns of technology, of human hubris ; she asks how one lives with technology, once it is there, what is required for morality in a virtual world. [...] Westworld is a series that castigates itself because of its seriality, entertainment that demonizes entertainment, an epic story that questions storytelling. "
“Explicitly tackling Big Themes - religion, technology, morality, and the nature of human (and inhuman) violence among them — while casting a captivating aura, Westworld impressively balances its weighty philosophical bearings with a heady and entertaining swirl of romance, murder, and mystery. "
“Westworld explicitly deals with the big issues - religion, technology, morality and the nature of human (and inhuman) violence - and at the same time brings a captivating aura into play. Westworld impressively balances its weighty philosophical stance with an intoxicating and entertaining vortex of romance, murder and mystery. "
