A Forest is a song by the British new wave / dark wave band The Cure . The song was released as the first single in March 1980 in all German-speaking countries and marked the band's commercial breakthrough. In the UK, the release drew their first appearance on the television show Top of the Pops and made the band known nationally to a wide audience.

background

A Forest was formed in late 1979 during the England tour of The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees , at which time Robert Smith was guitarist for both groups. The song was produced in the spring of 1980 during the ten-day recordings for the album Seventeen Seconds in London's Morgan Studio One by Smith and Mike Hedges . The almost six-minute version recorded for the album was greatly shortened for the single release.

Music production was shaped by the use of effects such as overdubs and loops and the contact microphones used to record the drums. The timbre of the recordings is described as cold and sterile and, according to Hedges, should underline the dark mood of the entire album as well as of A Forest :

“I really appreciated the musical direction - morose, atmospheric and very different to Three Imaginary Boys . We weren't thinking about commercialism or potential popularity at all. I pretty much followed Robert's instructions. ”

“I really liked the musical direction - grouchy, atmospheric and very different from Three Imaginary Boys . We didn't think about commercialization or potential popularity at all. "

- Mike Hedges in the liner notes for the 2005 re-released DeLuxe edition of Seventeen Seconds

A Forest heralds the "dark phase" of The Cure between 1980 and 1983, which she and other bands of the Gothic-Rock genre and the Dark-Wave trend in general became early musical representatives of the associated Gothic- Make subculture .

Publication and chart successes

reception

The song was covered by Waltari on So Fine (1994), Carpathian Forest on their debut album Black Shining Leather (1995) and Nouvelle Vague on their self-titled debut (2004) , among others .
