action

In the fictional town of Rose Creek, businessman Bartholomew Bogue is in control. He tries by all means to force the residents to sell their lands in order to expand his gold mines to this area. The situation escalates and Bogue's mercenaries shoot some villagers, including Emma Cullen's husband. Driven by revenge, she hires the bounty hunter Sam Chisolm to free the city from Bogue's grip. He gathers six other men around him: the player Josh Faraday, the sniper Goodnight Robicheaux, the trapper Jack Horne, the hit man Billy Rocks, the outlaw Vasquez and the Comanche Red Harvest. A first confrontation with Bogue's minions in Rose Creek can win these magnificent seven , but are aware that Bogue will return with an army. In preparation for the final battle, they train the town's citizens in combat and raid a nearby Bogues mine to recruit the forced miners for their cause.

When Bogue and his men arrive in Rose Creek, the defenders are faced with an overwhelming odds. However, through cleverly laid traps and ambushes, they succeed in gradually eliminating the men. But Horne falls in the fight against Bogue's commander Denali, who in turn is killed by Red Harvest. When the battle seems almost lost for Bogue, he brings a Gatling Gun into play. Numerous citizens as well as rocks and robicheaux fall victim to this. To destroy the Gatling Gun, Faraday sacrifices himself: he fakes a charge on the gun emplacement, but is shot down. When the Gatling riflemen consider Faraday defeated and grant him one last cigarette, the latter uses it to light a stick of dynamite and blow himself up with the position. Ultimately, it comes to the final showdown between Chisolm and Bogue. Chisolm wins the duel and reveals his true motives for the campaign against Bogue: once his men raped and murdered Chisolm's mother and sisters. He starts to strangle Bogue. Before he can use a weapon hidden in his boot, he is shot by Emma Cullen. In the end, the surviving three of the Magnificent Seven leave the heavily damaged city.

production

development

Already in 2012 there was talk of a remake of the 1960 film The Magnificent Seven , which in turn is based on the Japanese film The Seven Samurai (1954). Initially Tom Cruise was in discussion for one of the main roles; however, he declined in early 2015 for personal reasons. Names like Kevin Costner , Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon are also said to have come up, none of which play a role in the film. Jason Momoa had already agreed, but dropped out again in March 2015 because he was fully booked for the role of Aquaman in the film of the same name . Other sources reported that he left the project because of his character's short screen time.

music

The composer originally intended for the film, James Horner, died on June 22, 2015. Shortly after his death, it turned out that he had already started composing the film before it could even be shot. Simon Franglen , a friend of Horner's and also a composer, completed the soundtrack after his death and is also listed as a composer in the credits.

Filming

Filming ran from March 18 to August 18, 2015 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana, USA . Other locations in Louisiana were St. Francisville and Zachary .

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 16. The statement of reasons for the release states: “Good and bad must be clearly distinguished. The high number of fatalities, individual drastic, albeit not voyeuristic, scenes of violence as well as the rough manners can overwhelm children and young people under the age of 16. "

Reviews

The film received mixed reviews from critics. On the Rotten Tomatoes website , the film holds a 62% rating based on 204 reviews and an average rating of 6/10. Metacritic rates the film 54 out of 100 points, based on 48 rated reviews.

Carsten Baumgardt from filmstarts.de awarded 3.5 out of 5 stars and said in his conclusion: " Antoine Fuqua's reinterpretation of The Magnificent Seven is a classic Western in a modern action guise - with weaknesses in terms of content, but very handy and incredibly physical." The film service judged: “The production draws the emblematic figures with thick brushstrokes and does not refer to well-known spaghetti westerns. The original themes of greed, honor and responsibility are neglected in favor of gripping action entertainment. "

Gross profit

In the first week after its theatrical release in the USA, the film grossed almost 46 million US dollars and reached number 1 on the cinema charts. The global grossing of the film is around 162 million US dollars.
