action

Two men break into the Federal Reserve Bank of New York - the largest gold deposit in the world. One of the men, John Jaster, had a heart attack during the robbery and left his fingerprint while trying to take a pill. On the way out, Jaster watches as his accomplice shoots the tied guards from behind. Frightened, he then flees with the waiting transporter and the stolen gold. A little later he is arrested for being drunk driving. The investigating officer Clenteen goes to Jaster after evaluating the leads.

Alvin Sanders and his brother Stevie break into a warehouse. Alvin is arrested and by chance ends up in the same cell as Jaster, who was also arrested. The two have a conversation there in which Jaster reveals information about the hiding place of the prey. Jaster is mangled by Clenteen shortly after and dies of a heart attack while being questioned. The authorities now decide to fire Sanders under a pretext and to monitor him with a chip implanted beforehand - in the hope that the leader of the gold robbery will become aware of Sanders and coax the information from him.

Before long, the mastermind behind the robbery, an intelligent hacker , contacts Alvin. After several attempts by the officers to arrest him fail, Alvin becomes suspicious of the turbulent events and in turn leads the officers on the wrong track. In the meantime, the killer has gathered information about Alvin's family and kidnaps Sanders' girlfriend and newborn child. Although Alvin does not know where the gold is hiding, he pretends to give it away. Both go to a racecourse and leave the hostages in a car with a timed bomb in it. In one of the horse stables, Alvin outsmarts his kidnapper and a fight ensues. Alvin is able to escape, free his wife and child and drive the car to the racetrack, where the bomb detonates without harming other people. Shortly after the explosion, the murderer appears behind him to shoot him, but is in turn shot by Clenteen, who appears in time.

Some time later, Sanders suddenly understands one of Jaster's comments. He agreed with the authorities that he would receive a $ 2 million finder's fee for finding out where the gold was hidden. The final scene shows the gold being found in New York's Yankee Stadium .

Reviews

Desson Howe praised the "creative" direction by Antoine Fuqua and the portrayal of Jamie Foxx in the Washington Post of September 15, 2000.

Mick LaSalle praised the film's final 40 minutes and the portrayal of Jamie Foxx in the San Francisco Chronicle of September 15, 2000.

The lexicon of international films wrote: “Action comedy according to the usual dramaturgical patterns, despite some weaknesses largely solidly staged. The subplot with the decoy, a petty criminal, ensures liveliness, albeit little humor, in the rather brittle duel between good and evil. "

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".
