action

Robert McCall, a former Defense Intelligence Agency agent , now lives in an apartment complex in Massachusetts . He works as a taxi driver and helps people who have had hard times in life or who have experienced injustice. McCall is supported by his close friend and former secret service colleague Susan Plummer. So he travels z. E.g. in the opening scene of the film with the train to Istanbul to free the kidnapped daughter of a bookseller. Another case is Sam Rubinstein, a Holocaust survivor looking for his sister's painting. Sam and his sister were separated when they were moved to different camps by the Nazis. The painting was auctioned, however, as Sam could not provide any legal proof that he - and his sister, if she is still alive - are the rightful owners.

One day after McCall discovers that the garden in the back yard of the apartment complex has been devastated, he accepts the offer from Miles Whittaker - a young neighbor - and hires him to repaint the outside walls. Another time he saves Miles from a gang that urges him to commit contract killing for them.

One day Susan and DIA employee Dave York, a former McCall teammate, are asked by a government agency for help assessing a case in Brussels: Have an agent and his wife been or are they double homicides? Take away suicide ? After visiting the crime scene with York, Susan is ambushed and killed by two men in the hotel. The perpetrators with rucksacks can be seen on the video recordings of the surveillance cameras. McCall finds out from evidence that the hypothesis developed by local investigators that Susan may have been a victim of robbery is incorrect. McCall informs York, who had thought him dead for years, of his findings.

When McCall is attacked by a passenger in his taxi, he kills the attacker and takes his cell phone. When analyzing the data stored on it, McCall discovers that York is on the perpetrator's call list and therefore seeks York specifically in his home, where he confronts him. He frankly admits that he has been working as a mercenary since he was released from the DIA service after he felt "used and disposed of" by the government. He brags to McCall that he killed Susan Plummer himself because it was feared that she might bring the true background of what happened in Brussels to light.

York teammates Resnik and Ari head to Susan's house to kill her husband Brian, but McCall manages to get Brian to safety just in time. York breaks into McCall's apartment, where Miles is currently, with Kovac, another teammate. With McCall's help, he can initially hide in a secret passage behind a bookshelf, but is ultimately taken hostage by York and Kovac .

McCall returns to his oceanfront hometown, which is being evacuated as a hurricane approaches, and gets ready for York and his team. After McCall kills York's colleagues one by one, York, who is in sniper position on a watchtower, reveals to him that he has tied Miles up in the trunk of his car. He starts shooting at this to lure McCall out of his hiding place. York runs out of ammo after McCall sabotaged his final shot. York is torn down in a gust of wind and then confronted by McCall. This wins the upper hand and kills York.

McCall returns to Massachusetts, where Susan's information about the painting of Sam's sister enables him to reunite Sam with his missing sister. Miles finishes repainting the apartment complex, returns to school, and focuses on his art studies. McCall has moved back to his old house.

criticism

The Equalizer 2 received mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes , the film received a rating of 50% from 189 counted reviews. The consensus on the side is: " The Equalizer 2 delivers the visceral attack of a standardized vigilante thriller, but this clash of reliable talent ultimately proves to be a disappointing case study of declining earnings." On Metacritic , the film scored a Metascore of 50 out of 100 based on 43 reviews.

The film-dienst describes The Equalizer 2 as a continuation of a revenge thriller, broken down into “redundant episodes, that does not add anything new to its predecessor. Pedagogical rigor and brutal, unimaginatively staged action sequences come together in a strange mixture. ”Christoph Petersen says in his review of film releases :“ When watching “The Equalizer 2”, it is not really clear why Denzel Washington is here for the first time spread his 40-year career into a sequel to one of his box office hits. After all, the sequel has nothing really new to add to its predecessor from 2014, which in turn is loosely based on the 80s TV series “Der Equalizer”. [...] "The Equalizer 2" is a film for fans of the two-time Oscar winner and dry-served action of the harder pace, while the other viewers are likely to be disturbed by the meandering script and the clichéd vigilante subplots. "The editors of Cinema writes: “The sequel relies on the familiar ingredients, but only rarely reaches the disturbing force of its predecessor - which is also due to the slightly dissolute plot. The hurricane that director Antoine Fuqua (...) unleashed towards the end, however, makes for a worthy finale. McCall's opponents have sown the wind and they are reaping a storm. "
