Ashton Sanders (born October 24, 1995 in Carson ) is an American film actor .

Life and education

Ashton Sanders was born in Carson and grew up in Los Angeles . From the age of eight he played theater. He has appeared at the Los Angeles Theater, the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center, and the Central Los Angeles High School of Performing Arts. Sanders later received acting, speaking, and dance lessons from Wendy Raquel Robinson at the Amazing Grace Conservatory and Central Los Angeles High School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Film career

When Sanders was 15, he made his acting debut in The Retrieval . In it he played the lead role of 13-year-old Will, who is with a gang of bounty hunters in search of a fugitive ex-slave. In 2013, Sanders was awarded the audience award for his acting performance in this film at the New Orleans Film Festival and the Phoenix Film Festival together with other people involved in the film. Sanders later got a minor role in Straight Outta Compton .

During the filming of the film Moonlight , Sanders took a year off studying acting at DePaul University in Chicago . In the film, Sanders took on the role of the main character as a teenager, a homosexual son of a crack addict who grew up in Miami and has been in the process of identifying himself all his life. The film was screened at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival in 2016 . Like the mothers of director Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney , the writer of the drama that inspired the film, Sander's mother was also a drug addict, which, on the other hand, claimed to have helped him prepare for the role. The film was named Best Film at the 2017 Academy Awards . As initially La La Land as Best Picture was announced, but then after the discovery of an error Moonlight received the award, entered Sanders together with the film crew and his fellow actors on stage.

In December 2016, it was revealed that Sanders had received a role in the science fiction film Captive State alongside John Goodman . In the prison drama All Day and a Night , which was added to Netflix's program on May 1, 2020, Sanders took on the lead role of Jahkor Abraham Lincoln, who always dreamed of a career as a rapper, but like his father JD, played by Jeffrey Wright , ends up in jail even though he never wanted to be like him. In the film Jesus Was My Homeboy by Shaka King , Sanders was given the role of Larry Robertson, a member of the Black Panther Party, alongside Lakeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya .

In addition to his work as an actor, Sanders also worked as a model for Calvin Klein 's spring 2017 men's underwear collection .
