Barry Jenkins (2009)

Barry Jenkins (born November 19, 1979 in Miami ) is an American director and screenwriter who received an Oscar at the 2017 Academy Awards for the adaptation of the screenplay for his film Moonlight . Moonlight also won an Oscar in the “Best Film” category .

Life

Barry Jenkins was born in Miami and grew up there in the Liberty Square Neighborhood, which people colloquially call Pork & Beans (German pork and beans ). Liberty Square is a 753-unit public apartment complex in Miami. The housing project on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Liberty City in 1937 was the first of its kind for blacks in the southern United States. The neighborhood has the highest concentration of African Americans in southern Florida . Jenkins says he didn't know whites until he started college. He later studied at Florida State University in Tallahassee . Jenkins now lives in Los Angeles .

In late June 2017, Jenkins became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

Career

After several short films, Jenkins made his first feature film, Medicine for Melancholy, in 2008. This was a mumblecore . Jenkins' second feature film, Moonlight , premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2 and presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2016 . He worked for this a second time with the cameraman James Laxton , who also attended the film school at Florida State University and with whom he also has a personal friendship. The film is based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue Tarell Alvin McCraney , which tells the story of Chiron in three chapters, who grew up as an African-American with a broken childhood in the middle of the crowds and drug war of the 1980s in Miami. The collaboration between Jenkins and the award-winning playwright was already known in 2012. Jenkins and McCraney, who are roughly the same age, grew up not far from each other. Jenkins was named Best Director in IndieWire's 2016 Critics Poll . In December 2016, Jenkins received two Golden Globe Awards nominations , for Best Director and Best Screenplay , for his work on Moonlight , and in January 2017, a nomination for Best Film Production for the Directors Guild of America Award . On January 24, 2017, Jenkins received Oscar nominations for his work as director and screenwriter of the film at the 2017 Academy Awards and was able to receive this prestigious film award in the "Screenplay" category in February.

In addition to the announced comic adaptation A Contract with God , in which Jenkins is co- directing with Tze Chun , he is working as a screenwriter on a film about America's first female Olympic gold medalist in boxing Claressa “T-Rex” Shields . In March 2017 it was announced that Jenkins would be writing and directing a miniseries for Amazon based on the novel The Underground Railroad . His film If Beale Street Could Talk , based on a novel by James Baldwin of the same name , opened in German cinemas on March 7, 2019.

In 2017, Jenkins was selected as a jury member for the short film competition and the Cinéfondation series at the 70th Cannes International Film Festival .
