The focus of the action is often young people, their internal views and interpersonal problems that emerge in long dialogues. Mumblecore is the attempt to depict realistic human interactions taking into account the personal experiences of the directors and actors. Andrew Bujalski is known as the godfather of Mumblecore . His directorial debut in 2002, Funny Ha Ha , is considered the first mumblecore film.

In 2005 some mumblecore films were shown at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) in Austin / Texas . B. Bujalski's second film Mutual Appreciation , The Puffy Chair by brothers Mark and Jay Duplass and Kissing on the Mouth by Joe Swanberg. It was at this film festival that the Mumblecore directors met for the first time, so that one cannot speak of a movement.

The word Mumblecore comes from Andrew Bujalski's sound engineer Eric Masunaga. He was asked during the South by Southwest Film Festival 2005 what similarities the films Mutual Appreciation , The Puffy Chair and Kissing on the Mouth had in common. The most obvious commonality for him was the poor quality of the respective soundtracks of the films. Sound is an often neglected element in do-it-yourself productions. The dialogues were only audible to him as mumble , as mumbling . The term was first used by Bujalski in an interview with indieWIRE magazine .

Direct role models for the Mumblecore directors are the lo-fi independent films of the 1990s. Archetypal is the movie Slacker by Richard Linklater . Hence the names "neo-slacker" or "slackavettes" for the Mumblecore filmmakers. The influence of Kevin Smith ( Clerks ), Rose Troche and Guinevere Turner ( Go Fish ), John Cassavetes and, ultimately, Andy Warhol's The Chelsea Girls and various other of his talkies , heavily dialogue-heavy, improvised films can also be felt.

In 2007, ten Mumblecore films were shown at the IFC Center, an art house cinema in New York, under the heading "The New Talkies: Generation DIY", which helped the genre to become even more popular. The film critic-operated New York DVD distributor Benten Films , which promoted Mumblecore films, played an equally role as a catalyst .

Since the appearance of the film Cyrus (dt. Cyrus - my friend, her son and me ) has been speculated about the end of Mumblecore due to the professionalization of the directors. Cyrus is a studio production with the participation of well-known actors. Filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass, however, have largely stayed true to their principles. So the actors got involved in improvisation.

Mumblecore in German-speaking countries

Mumblecore is not a purely American phenomenon. The term Berlin Mumblecore or German Mumblecore or, more rarely, Berliner Flow has been around since 2009 . Similar to the Berlin School , attempts are being made to intervene in the discourse on German film by critically reflecting on the funding and production conditions for it.

The spread of crowdfunding in Germany has been essential for the emergence of Berlin Mumblecore since around 2010. It has become possible to finance films that go beyond public film funding, but which have to or want to get by with small and very small budgets. Actors of the Berlin Mumblecore criticize the German film funding for the fact that access to it is very difficult and tedious. In order to be able to produce at all, they forego larger subsidized budgets.

Berlin Mumblecore films are z. B. Oysters without shell (2009) by Jette Miller . In 2011 the films Frontalwatte (by Jakob Lass ) and Papa Gold (by Tom Lass , leading role Peter Trabner ) were released. In 2012 Klappe Cowboy was released! by Timo Jacobs and Ulf Behrens as well as Big Girls by Axel Ranisch (with Heiko Pinkowski and Peter Trabner), who won a number of film prizes at festivals and provoked overwhelming reactions from critics and audiences. In 2013, Silvi by Nico Sommer appeared , who premiered at the 63rd International Film Festival in Berlin in the Perspective German Cinema section and received a lot of praise from both audiences and critics.

Various films that are classified as German or Berlin Mumblecore were shown at film festivals, received awards and were also shown in cinemas. The film thickness girls from and with Axel Ranisch received 2011 at the Lünen Film Festival the prize for best screenplay, went in 2012 to the Brandenburg Film Festival achtung berlin where he received the new berlin award in the category Best Feature Film ,, ran in 2012 on the Slamdance Film Festival under the title Heavy Girls and received prizes in the categories Spirit of Slamdance Sparky Award and Special Jury Award for Bold Originality , received the jury award in the feature-length films section at the 6th Festival Mauvais Genre in Tours 2012 , received the jury award in 2012 of the Lesbian Schwulen Filmtage Hamburg , received the special prize of the German Short Film Award in 2012 for films with a running time of more than 30 to 78 minutes and a. The crew of the film Love Steaks received the New German Cinema 2013 award in all categories .

The filmmakers assigned to German Mumblecore have intensively reflected on their work as such and written concepts that define the framework within which they want to work. Axel Ranisch designed the Very Good Manifesto for the filming of Big Girls . The director Jakob Lass , the cameraman Timon Schäppi, the composer Golo Schultz and the producer Ines Schiller developed the FOGMA concept with specific methods and procedures for shooting Love Steaks , e.g. B. the deliberate restriction of the rules of the game in favor of playing with the rules, the exemption from conventions. It is also a tool for self-reflection. It will u. a. critically dealt with the conditions during the shooting of low-budget films and found constructive manners for this: the ideal balance between under- and overburdening the team, the state of "flow", is to be achieved.

In January 2012 Andrew Bujalski was invited to a workshop talk in Berlin by the operators of the film magazine Revolver .

In November 2014 the German Mumblecore symposium took place at the Deutsches Filminstitut with film screenings and panel discussions with directors Hanna Doose , Jakob Lass , Tom Lass , Aron Lehmann , Axel Ranisch , Nico Sommer and Isabell Šuba , with the actor Peter Trabner and with Lectures by Bernd Zywietz and Urs Spörri took place in Frankfurt am Main and Mainz, respectively.
