V / H / S is an American found footage episode horror film from 2012. In 2013, the follow-up production S-VHS was made .

action

V / H / S consists of a found footage framework (Tape 56) and five found footage films by various directors.

Tape 56

Brad, Gary, Rox and Zak make amateur films. They pull up the tops of young women on the street, destroy someone else's property or film themselves with hidden cameras during intercourse with one-night stands. They then sell those films to a porn store for $ 50. Excerpts from these films were originally on the tape of V / H / S, so that they can be seen for a few seconds at the beginning and during cuts.

As they film themselves watching one of their films, one of the boys says he got a new job that should make them a lot more money if they just stole a single videotape from a retiree's house. They also film this attack with two cameras. When they find the pensioner in his house, he hangs apparently dead in an armchair. In front of him is a pyramid of old television sets. While three of the boys continue to search the house, Brad watches the video that is in a video recorder.

Amateur night

Clint uses video glasses to record him and two friends (Shane and Patrick) picking up two girls (Lily and Lisa) at a party. In the car they give Lily, who keeps saying "I love you", drugs. Lisa falls into a coma pretty soon. When Shane starts making love with Lily, Clint notices that she has very strange, scaly feet. Shane doesn't let him have his say, however. When Patrick wants to have fun with Lily, Clint goes into the bathroom. Suddenly Patrick storms into the bathroom because Lily has turned into a terrifying creature with fangs and cat eyes and tears Shane apart. Patrick therefore armed himself with the shower curtain rod. However, since Lily caused a power failure, he cannot see her properly and is also killed.

Clint escapes via the balcony into a stairwell, but he cannot open the emergency exit at first and falls, breaking his wrist. When Lily tries to attack him, she asks if he doesn't like it, then lets go of him and starts crying. Clint opens the emergency exit and runs to the hotel's night watchman, who does not let him in. He continues to run to two men at a car. However, they defend themselves against him. Then Lily grabs him from behind and flies away with him. Clint can catch a glimpse of her wings. Then his video glasses fall on the floor.

Tape 56

Gary and Zak also find a video collection in the basement. Not knowing which one exactly to steal, Zak searches for a container, but sees someone roaming the room. Meanwhile, Brad watches another video.

Second honeymoon

Stephanie films the trip through the desert that she takes with her friend Sam on Route 66.

One evening someone knocks on the door of her hotel room. The film then starts again when Sam tells Stephanie what happened. A girl stood in front of the door who wanted to be taken the next day. Sam says he finds her physically intimidating and generally weird.

Somebody films the two of them sleeping with her camera at night, pulls the covers down, and tries to cut open her underpants with a knife when she pulls the covers up again. The person steals money and dips Sam's toothbrush into the toilet water. In the bathroom you can see that it is a young woman.

The next day, the two drive to the Grand Canyon before returning to the hotel.

At night someone films himself stabbing Sam's neck with a knife. Then a woman takes off a mask and kisses Stephanie. This is repeatedly interrupted by someone filming the passing road while driving a car. Finally, Stephanie, who drives the car, asks: "Did you delete it?"

Tape 56

Brad watches another video. He does not notice that the supposedly dead person is no longer on the sofa. Gary and Zak put the videos in the basement. You speculate on the content and decide to definitely copy the videos beforehand.

Tuesday the 17th

Joey, Samantha, Spider and Wendy drive to a lake and film each other. However, the camera is a bit broken and sometimes does not record properly. Then you see what was on the tape before: bloody corpses.

Once at the lake, Spider accompanies Samantha into the surrounding forest, where she wants to pee behind a tree. Then she is hit in the head by a throwing knife. Then Spider is brought to the ground and stabbed. The youth cannot recognize the supernatural murderer. You can only see it roughly on the video, where it then causes a wide horizontal stripe with image errors in the center of the image, which become stronger the closer it gets.

Wendy finds the camera and goes to Joey. While she is talking to him, the creature comes from behind and stabs Joey. He then follows Wendy. This apparently took the other youngsters with her as bait and prepared the forest with traps. She wants to contact the creature, but it snatches Wendy and eviscerates her.

Tape 56

Gary and Zak come into the room with the TVs. But Brad has disappeared. While Gary searches for the others, Zak watches one of the videos.

The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger

Medical student James is doing a video conference with his girlfriend Emily. She tells him that she hears strange things in her apartment. Her arm also hurts.

One night when she heard something again, she started the video conference and opened the door behind which she heard it. When nothing happens, she sits down on the bed again. In the background you can see a small child closing the door again.

The next day, Emily says that her arm is not getting better.

When it is haunted again one night and the two make a video conference, Emily finds the small child in the living room.

The next day, Emily poked a hole in her arm to find out what was hurting her so much. The man advises against it.

When it haunts again one night, Emily decides to talk to the child. This time, however, there are several children in her living room who apparently knock Emily to the floor. James, who Emily suspects to be in Michigan, walks in and takes a fetus-like thing out of Emily's stomach. You learn that there's a tracking device in Emily's arm.

During the day, Emily tells James that she was with a doctor who had certified that she was schizoaffective. She says James deserves a better friend than her because she has so many problems.

The video ends with the man holding a video conference with another woman who also has a painful arm and who also believes James is her boyfriend.

Tape 56

Gary comes into the room with the TVs. Zak has disappeared and the dead pensioner is no longer hanging in the armchair. Gary looks for Zak and finds him lying decapitated on a radiator when the pensioner throws his head at him. He pursues and kills the fleeing Gary. In the room with the televisions, a cassette is then placed in the video recorder while only the armchair is visible.

10/31/98

September 17, 1998: Three couples are having a barbecue in a park. However, the video soon breaks off.

October 31, 1998: A young man dresses up as a bear for Halloween. There is a hidden camera in the bear costume. He and three friends want to go to a Halloween house party. But the house is empty. You walk slowly up the house. Again and again little girls in white dresses appear briefly and then disappear again. In the attic, four men use a chained young woman for a ritual in which they whip her. The friends flee, but then decide to save the woman.

The tormentors warn the woman that she must absolutely stay in the house, but are gradually carried away to heaven.

After the woman was rescued, as she escaped through the house, hands came out of the wall everywhere, the doorknobs fizzled out and household items began to float. The friends flee through the cellar and want to take the woman to the hospital in her car. On the journey, first her transmission disappears and then the woman who suddenly stands outside the car with a shabby grin. Only now do the friends notice that they are standing in the middle of a level crossing. An oncoming train rams their vehicle.

criticism

Robert Cherkowski from Filmstarts.de awarded 3.5 out of 5 stars and said the directors surprised everyone with “clever ideas, a dense atmosphere and tough gore violence”. Jochen Werner from Critic.de described the film as an ambitious and original work.

publication

The film was released in US theaters and video-on-demand services on August 31, 2012 with an R rating.

In Germany, it was released for distribution by Splendid Film on October 18, 2012 and can also be purchased from October 26. The FSK gave the uncut version no youth approval .

Remarks

  • The way in which Lily tears up Shane in "Amateur Night" is that of the witch from the computer game Left 4 Dead .
  • The escape scene in “Amateur Night” is reminiscent of Faith , the protagonist from the computer game Mirror's Edge .
  • The killer from “Tuesday the 17th” is reminiscent of the portrayal of Slender Man in the computer game Slender - The Eight Pages : He is dressed in black, his face is barely recognizable and the closer he is, the more distorted the image becomes.
  • Tuesday the 17th is four days after Friday the 13th - the "4" is an unlucky number in China, Japan and Korea.
  • The hands that come out of the wall in “10/31/98” are reminiscent of the horror film Ekel by Roman Polański .
