Slender - The Eight Pages (also Slender: The Eight Pages originally only slender called) is a free-to-play - first-person - Survival horror - computer game , which in June 2012 by Parsec Productions develops and for the operating systems Windows and macOS was released (a version for Linux was announced) and builds on the internet history of Slender Man .

In 2013, Slender - The Arrival, an official, paid sequel appeared.

Game mechanics and storyline

The scene of the event in Slender - The Eight Pages is a forest in an almost dark night. The player controls a human character, the possibilities of which are very limited. The figure moves slowly walking or running and is equipped with a flashlight. The physical condition of the virtual alter ego is limited, so that only short-term sprints are possible, the capacity of the flashlight is also exhausted after a certain time and the light becomes weaker and weaker. The forest, in which the pawn moves freely, is bordered by a fence, which limits the range of action. In addition to the countless trees, there are vehicles, small houses, rocks, pipes or gas tanks, among other things. This creates certain areas within the forest, which are mostly connected to one another by paths.

After successfully completing the game, a game mode can be unlocked that enables a game with a forest as bright as day.

Goal of the game

A clear plot cannot be seen in Slender - The Eight Pages . The player is prompted by screen text to find a total of eight note sheets distributed in the game world. During the search, the character is pursued by a faceless, human-like creature, the Slender Man . After every page found, the oppressive atmosphere is intensified by an intensification of the background noise, and the probability of being caught by the Slender Man and losing the game increases. When all sides are found, the character is immediately grabbed by the Slender Man and the game ends.

Slender Man

Besides the character, the so-called Slender Man is the only creature in Slender - The Eight Pages and represents the insurmountable adversary of the game. The Slender Man is a thin, gigantic creature with elongated arms and wears a black suit. His pale-white face is without any facial features and only vaguely to be guessed.

As soon as the first page has been taken, the Slender Man follows the character relentlessly. Basically, he only moves when the player is not looking at him . If he reaches the player, the controls are locked and the camera turns to Slender Man's face, after which the screen flickers and the game ends.

When the Slender Man is anywhere in the player's field of vision, the screen will gradually be filled with white noise . This accelerates if the player keeps the opponent's line of sight for too long, looks directly at the opponent or shortens the distance. If visual contact is maintained for too long, the game also ends. For this reason, there is no way to stop the Slender Man's chase simply by looking at him. The noise effect is a little weaker when the player has switched off his flashlight.

If the Slender Man appears in the field of vision of the player from a medium to short distance (which can happen, for example, if he suddenly turns around), a loud, dissonant piano chord sounds as a shock effect. When this happens, the character has the opportunity to run at a higher speed for a short time, but this also permanently reduces stamina.

The game becomes more difficult the more pages the player collects. The range of vision is reduced, the Slender Man follows the figure faster and can also teleport itself directly into the vicinity of the figure from a certain point in time .

The Slender Man is meanwhile the opponent in many other games, for example in the games of Marc Steene, developer of Slender Man's Shadow.

Development and publication

Slender was developed by Mark J. Hadley, who is known on YouTube under the pseudonym AgentParsec, based on the Unity engine .

Slender is currently in beta version 0.9.7. From version 0.9.4 there is a day mode that differs from the old version in that the player does not need a flashlight. The day mode is only activated when the player has already found all eight pages. From version 0.9.5 there is also an "MH mode", which is based on the Internet story of Marble Hornets . With version 0.9.7 the game was officially renamed to Slender - The Eight Pages to distinguish it from future versions. Two new flashlight modes have also been added (a flashlight that has to be cranked for recharging and a light stick ).

As an Easter Egg there was a 20-dollar mode, in which the song Gimme 20 Dollars by rapper Ron Browz was played when the Slender Man appeared. This was removed in version 0.9.7 due to copyright violations.

Slender is currently being redeveloped by independent developers based on the Source Engine . a. be equipped with a cooperative multiplayer mode.

In early September 2012, Mark J. Hadley announced that he was working on a successor with Blue Isle Studios, which was released under the name Slender: The Arrival . The beta of the successor has been available since February 13, 2013 at a low purchase price. The finished game was released on March 26, 2013.
