Friendship Plus (Original title: No Strings Attached ) is an American romantic comedy that was released in US cinemas on January 21, 2011 and in German cinemas on February 17. The main roles are played by Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher , directed by Ivan Reitman . In the film, the main characters Emma Kurtzman and Adam Franklin try to have a relationship without feelings, which is all about having sex with each other. The top rule is not to fall in love with each other.
action
Emma and Adam have known each other since they were kids and at summer camp . Back then, however, they only had a friendly relationship. Over the years, they meet several times by chance, for example at a student party, but it remains a fleeting acquaintance.
One day, however, Adam learns that his father is now in a relationship with his ex-girlfriend Vanessa. In desperation, Adam goes to a bar with his friends and gets drunk. Under the influence of alcohol he calls all the girls in his phone book to end up in bed with someone.
The next morning Adam wakes up naked and hungover on a couch in an apartment he doesn't know. It turns out that he ended up in Emma and her three roommates' apartment. When he goes to her room with Emma to get dressed, the two have sex. Since Emma cannot and does not want to bond emotionally, the two decide to leave it in a pure sex relationship, without love or obligations.
This creates a relationship of casual sex between the two. Since Emma has little time as a doctor, she enjoys having sex after her shift without having to have breakfast with anyone the next morning. Over time, however, the two develop feelings for each other, which they do not want to admit to each other for the time being. Adam's feelings for Emma in particular are growing stronger; he also becomes increasingly jealous of Emma's colleague Sam.
Eventually Adam decides to take the initiative and asks Emma to meet on Valentine's Day , provided that it only stays at that one meeting. The two spend a date lovingly planned by Adam, but when Adam confesses his love to Emma in the course of the night, Emma angrily protests. Adam is hurt and so the contact between the two ends.
The day before her sister's wedding, however, Emma realizes her feelings for Adam. After she called him but he turned her away, she gets into her car and drives to his house. There she has to watch as Adam disappears into his house with Lucy, a work colleague. Desperate, Emma gets back in her car and drives back to her sister's wedding. On the way to the wedding, however, she learns that Adam's father is in the hospital because of cough syrup abuse , and decides to go there.
Adam, who learns this from Vanessa, immediately goes to see his father. In front of the hospital he meets Vanessa, who has realized that she doesn't want a relationship with an older man and gives Adam his father's dog. After Adam visits his father in the hospital, he leaves the hospital just as Emma drives up. She can finally confess her love to him. The two decide to have a real relationship from now on, with breakfast together, holding hands and cuddling.
main characters
Emma Kurtzman is a woman who doesn't want to be stopped by anything, especially romance or even love. Hence, she is not a relationship type and tries to avoid a relationship. Since Emma is an ambitious doctor who works up to 80 hours a week, a relationship is out of the question, but she still doesn't want to do without sex. The pure sex relationship with Adam is the perfect solution for her.
Adam Franklin is a charming and easy-going man who has always led a very carefree life. Financial problems are alien to him as he is the son of a former television star. But his father disappoints Adam badly when he starts a relationship with Adam's ex-girlfriend Vanessa and thus gets the plot of the film rolling.
production
The film grossed $ 147.78 million worldwide on a production budget of $ 25 million, including $ 70.6 million in the United States .
Period mix
When Emma is " incapacitated " by her period , Adam puts together a mix CD for her, the title of which is an allusion to this condition. The songs on the CD include:
- Even Flow ( Pearl Jam )
- Red Red Wine ( Neil Diamond or UB40 )
- Sunday Bloody Sunday ( U2 )
- I've Got The World On A String ( Frank Sinatra )
- Bleeding Love ( Leona Lewis )
Reviews
"For Ashton Kutcher, who otherwise likes to play against his own excessive demands, Adam is an ideal role because he can be overwhelmed here."
“Friendship plus” may have looked very attractive as a screenplay about loathsome people in their mid-twenties in the professional orientation phase; What Reitman made of it, however, has not succeeded as a modern version of Harry and Sally in the form of a sexually pepped inventory of friendship between the sexes. Quite honest scenes [...] drown in a sea of bad situational comedy. "
“It's hard to bear the way Reitman helps his main male character by taking up the fight against Emma's unromantic worldview and, with almost cynical pleasure, drives out her insistence on independence. He follows a strategy that is already known from his son Jason ( Juno , Up in the Air ). At first glance, he seems to be negotiating modern content in a critical and impartial manner, in order to then steer it into the well-known value-conservative channels. Emma's attempt to have a purely sexual relationship that gets by without commitment must of course fail in this genuine romantic comedy. "
