action

John Winger , who lost his job and girlfriend on the same day, decides to give his life a new direction. He persuades his friend Russell Ziskey to join the US Army with him . Winger's loose mouth and his disrespectful demeanor are met with intensified drill by the instructor Sergeant Hulka . Commander Captain Stillman turns out to be incompetent, and the majority of the recruits are rather simple-minded. The only bright spots during the basic training are the military police officers Stella Hansen and Louise Cooper . The two friends pick up on Winger and Ziskey repeatedly, but give their romantic feelings priority over military order.

When Hulka is injured during an exercise shortly before the end of his training, Winger takes over the drill of his comrades and shows the result to an amazed audience on parade day. General Barnicke is enthusiastic and sends the unit to Italy under Stillman's command. Together with the recovered Hulka, they are to present the EM 50 , an armored and heavily armed mobile home. When Winger and Ziskey find out that the two military policemen are in Germany at the same time, they steal the EM 50 to visit them. Stillman, trying to cover up the incident, follows them with the rest of the unit. However, the troops accidentally cross the Iron Curtain and are captured by the Soviet Army in Czechoslovakia . Only Hulka can evade access and make an emergency call.

In the EM 50, Winger and his three colleagues catch the call for help and rush to rescue their comrades. The upgraded mobile home turns out to be an unbeatable weapon and everyone manages to escape. Back home, the soldiers are celebrated as heroes and media stars, Hulka quits duty and Stillman is transferred to the vicinity of Nome , Alaska .

synchronization

There have been two dubbed versions since the DVD version in 2005. The synchronization became necessary because the first version did not support Dolby Digital editing (similar to the film Saturday Night Fever ).

Reviews

I think an elk is smooching me! received mostly positive reviews in the United States, earning an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 36 reviews.

Roger Ebert rated the comedy in the Chicago Sun-Times of January 1, 1981 with 3.5 out of 4 stars and called it an “anarchic booby movie” that celebrates everything that is “disrespectful”, “ruthless”, “foolish”, “ being undisciplined ”and sometimes“ scatological ”. Bill Murray and Harold Ramis would make a "wonderful" team.

"Rather silly than amusing military farce, which despite trying chaotic comedy fails to expose militarism and flat enemy images."

Trivia

  • The scenes at “Schloss von Hapsburg” were not shot in Germany. It's the Greystone Mansion in California . In a scene about 30 seconds long at this location, some film clichés relating to Germany are compressed: John uses the terms Dankeschön , Volkswagen , Schnitzel and Hansel and Gretel and two cars have license plates with the letters WH and SS .
  • The film grossed approximately $ 85 million and was the fifth highest-grossing film of 1981 in the United States.
  • There were two versions of the film. The longer version contains scenes in the Latin American jungle. After John and Russell sit unauthorized on a plane with a special unit, they land with rebels, whom they give some drugs and escape by distracting a song.
