Day of Decision - Draft Day is an American Football - Drama in 2014 with Kevin Costner in the title role . Directed by Ivan Reitman , the screenplay was written by Scott Rothman and Raijv Joseph .

action

On the morning of NFL Draft Day, the general manager of the Cleveland Browns , Sonny Weaver Jr., negotiates the first pick from the Seattle Seahawks . Allegedly in order to sign a new star quarterback , he gives up the first round picks for the next three years. Shortly before, he found out about the pregnancy of his girlfriend Ali, who also works for the Browns. During the day he has to grapple with both his early morning decision and his private problems.

While most of Team Weaver's scouts are celebrating for the supposed coup , coach Penn, who has already won the Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys , is angry about the deal and threatens Weaver with resignation. He sees the entire future of the team at risk and would rather work with current quarterback Brian Drew rather than bet on an uncertain future with rookie Bo Callahan, who everyone expects to be voted first overall. Weaver offers him to consider his resignation until the end of the day and instructs his scouts to look for Callahan's weaknesses to find out why the Seahawks gave him up by swapping the first pick. However, apart from a few character flaws, the scouts do not find any serious flaws in Callahan. Weaver therefore assumes that the Seahawks are still interested in Callahan.

At the same time, middle linebacker Vontae Mack tries to win Weaver's favor. He points out to him that he could sink Callahan several times during his college days .

To make matters worse, Sonny's mother Barb Weaver comes to the club's premises with Sonny's father's urn. She wants to scatter the ashes on the training field that is named after the former coach. Sonny Jr. had fired his own father as a coach because he was concerned about his health.

When the actual draft begins, Weaver, to everyone's surprise, picks Vontae Mack, instead of the favored Callahan, as the overall first. The following teams are now insecure, which is why the Browns let the chance on Callahan slip and also decide for other players. Shortly afterwards, Weaver negotiates the sixth pick of the first round in exchange for the second-round picks for the next three years. Since he can now choose right in front of the Seahawks and can still snatch Callahan away from them, he negotiates with the Seahawks and gets the three first round picks again as well as an experienced punt returner . Furthermore, Weaver finally makes the relationship with Ali public.
