Ghostbusters II is an American science fiction comedy directed by Ivan Reitman from 1989 and the sequel to the film Ghostbusters from 1984.

action

The action begins five years after the first part. The Ghostbusters were sued by the city for the destruction caused in the fight against evil and are now banned from doing any other ghost hunter activities. They only appear on children's birthdays, but are only laughed at there.

When the stroller with Dana Barrett's baby rolls uncontrollably across the streets and then suddenly stops on 1st Avenue, there is no logical explanation for it. So Dana turns to the former ghost hunters. Since they are not officially allowed to work, they secretly investigate the case and drill a hole in 1st Avenue disguised as road workers. There they come across an underground flow of slime in the old Van Horne tunnel. However, because they caused a power outage in New York , they end up in court. In the courtroom there is a sample of the slime that reacts to the insults of the judge and suddenly throws out two evil spirits that the judge had sent to the electric chair. In view of the ghosts' threat of vengeance, the judge gives the ghost hunters back their license to hunt ghosts, whereupon they can capture the two ghosts.

Over time, the ghost hunters find that the flow of slime flows directly towards the Museum of Art and is related to the paranormal image of a certain Vigo, an evil prince of the early modern period. Vigo himself controls the museum director who is supposed to steal Dana's child. Vigo needs his body to advance into the 20th century as a ruler. He almost seems to succeed - at New Year the slime closes the museum and wild ghosts chase through the city. The bad thoughts of New Yorkers keep heating up this slime.

In order to destroy Vigo, the ghost hunters develop a positively charged form of slime and use it to spray the Statue of Liberty , which then runs across the city to the Museum of Art in order to mobilize the good thoughts of the New York people. This succeeds, and so they can - with a few detours - ultimately defeat Vigo and save the world.

background

The budget was about US $ 30 million. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman worked for a lower fee and were given a percentage of the profits of the film. Ghostbusters II opened in American cinemas on June 16, 1989 and set a record for the best three-day result with gross profits of US $ 29.4 million within the first three days, which was broken by Batman a week later . The worldwide box office income was US $ 215.5 million. After its German theatrical release on January 11, 1990, over 2 million viewers saw the film. Some of those involved later expressed their dissatisfaction with Ghostbusters II and the box office results.

development

Bill Murray was against the sequel, but joked that he ended up being waved too much money in the face. He suggested naming the movie "The Last of the Ghostbusters" to make sure there was no third part to follow.

occupation

Reviews

"An unimaginative, humorless continuation of the popular anti-ghost story."

“Basically, this garish comic book adventure is a fairly accurate copy of the hugely successful first Ghostbusters film; Elaborate tricks, wit and speed still ensure the corresponding entertainment value. "

Sequels

The animated series The Real Ghostbusters makes reference to the film in some episodes, but plays in its own canon . The plot of Ghostbusters: The Video Game takes place in 1991 and explains, among other things, the origins of the slime and how it got into the subway tunnel.
