action

Erin Gilbert is a doctor of particle physics and years ago was co-author of a with Dr. Abby Yates wrote a book about the paranormal that she has become embarrassed about. When the existence of the book at her university becomes known because Abby sells it on Amazon, Erin loses her job. She confronts Abby, but goes to the Aldridge Mansion with her and the engineer Jillian Holtzmann to investigate a ghost sighting.

Subway clerk Patty Tolan also sees a ghost and turns to Erin and Abby. The four women rent a headquarters together and hire the attractive but not particularly intelligent Kevin as secretary. After successfully catching ghosts at a rock concert, the quartet becomes known as the Ghostbusters . You find the cause of the ghostly apparitions in the genius caretaker Rowan, who believes that everyone is mistreated. As a revenge, he has developed devices with which one can attract ghosts. His goal is to open a portal to the spirit world in Times Square in the basement of the Mercado Hotel where he works. When the Ghostbusters track down him and his portal machine there, he electrocutes himself and the machine can be switched off. The mayor thanks the Ghostbusters for their commitment, but declares them to be sensational frauds to the public.

Rowan's ghost returns from the afterlife, first occupying Abby and then Kevin and activating the machine in the hotel, causing tons of ghosts to haunt the city. He releases Kevin's body and finally appears in the house-high shape of the white ghost from the Ghostbusters logo. The Ghostbusters can eventually reverse the polarity of the portal, sucking all the ghosts and Rowan into the closing portal, saving the city.

Emergence

Ghostbusters - The Ghostbusters of 1984 continued five years later with Ghostbusters II . Bill Murray was initially against the sequel, but joked that he ended up being waved too much money in the face. He suggested the film title "The Last of the Ghostbusters" so that no third part would follow. Harold Ramis was skeptical about Ghostbusters III because everyone has gotten older and is difficult to unite. Bill Murray is just waiting for the truck with the load of money, Ramis quipped in an interview. The two had stopped working together after disagreements during the filming of Groundhog Day (1993).

Ghostbusters was owned by Sony , Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd , Harold Ramis, and Ivan Reitman at the time . Anyone could prevent a new project with their veto .

Dan Aykroyd's script for Ghostbusters 3: Hellbent literally had ghost hunters old and new "go to hell" to fight the devil, a Donald Trump- like mogul. The realization failed in 1999 for cost reasons and because Bill Murray thought the idea was too crazy.

Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky have been working on a script since 2008 and Etan Cohen from 2012 . Venkman was supposed to become a ghost and Donald (the baby from Ghostbusters II ) would lead the new ghost hunters. Bill Murray canceled again. As a result of the hacking attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, it became known that they wanted to change his mind with an appeal.

In an agreement, everyone sold their shares in Sony, ending the 25-year stagnation in the franchise.

After the death of Harold Ramis († 2014), Ivan Reitman resigned from directing the planned sequel. Max Landis was under discussion as the new scriptwriter. In his treatment , Egon Spengler's daughter mentioned the new Ghostbusters . However, the film studio decided on Paul Feig's idea of a remake with exclusively female ghost hunters. Ivan Reitman had other ideas, but gave Paul Feig a free hand.

Tom Rothman, the successor to the dismissed Amy Pascal , cut the budget from 169 million US dollars to 154 million US dollars in April 2015 . There were many test screenings that led to many changes. According to Dan Aykroyd, costly post-shooting was necessary because Paul Feig thought suggested scenes were unnecessary. Aykroyd later blamed himself for not intervening as a producer.

occupation

On January 27, 2015, Paul Feig tweeted a photo of the leading actresses: Kristen Wiig , Melissa McCarthy , Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones . The preferred candidate Emma Stone had refused to play because she felt a franchise was too much of an obligation. Jennifer Lawrence had to cancel due to the filming of X-Men: Apocalypse .

Paul Feig had previously worked in the films Bridal Alarm , Taffe Girls and Spy - Susan Cooper Undercover with Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig as the leading actresses.

From the original films , Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver , Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts have guest appearances, but not in their old roles. Rick Moranis said there was no point in going on and passed it. Bill Murray plays the skeptic Dr. Martin Heiss, whom a dragon spirit pushes out of the window. Annie Potts answers the phone as an unfriendly hotel employee. As a taxi driver, Dan Aykroyd says the well-known saying “I ain't afraid of no ghosts!”. The owner of the hearse and uncle of Patty Tolan is Ernie Hudson. Sigourney Weaver is Rebecca Gorin, Jillian Holtzmann's mentor. Robin Shelby (dressed in Slimer's costume for Ghostbusters II ) speaks the female Slimer. Harold Ramis appears in the form of a bronze bust in the background of the university.

Filming

Filming, codenamed "Flapjack," began on June 17, 2015 in Boston and ended on September 19, 2015 in New York City .

The original singer, Ray Parker, Jr. , regretted the missed call and abstained from evaluating.

5 Seconds of Summer sang the song Girls Talk Boys . The music video is based on the film, but the song only plays for three seconds in the film.

Zayn Malik , former member of the boy band One Direction , sang a song called wHo for the Ghostbuster s soundtrack.

reception

publication

The theatrical release, which was announced for July 22, 2016, was later brought forward to July 15, 2016. The German theatrical release was postponed from July 28, 2016 to August 4, 2016.

On February 13, 2016, a hidden link (bit.ly/000917) in Paul Feig's Twitter profile picture led to the first teaser trailer, which announced the trailer premiere for March 3, 2016. International trailers were released on March 9, 2016.

After the negative reactions on YouTube - see controversy in advance - the second trailer was published on May 18, 2016 (internationally two days later) only on other platforms such as Facebook .

There were further insights from Ghostbusters Day on June 8th, the day of the cinema premiere of the first Ghostbusters film.

The German first broadcast on free TV achieved poor audience ratings on March 3, 2019 .

Controversy in advance

The announcement that Paul Feig had pushed through a remake with a female cast instead of the long-planned sequel triggered a partially misogynistic shit storm on the Internet . Among other things, it was criticized that Feig's previous films had a predominantly female audience, while the target groups of the Ghostbusters films were primarily children and families. His vulgar humor does not match the tone of the Ghostbusters films. A summary of the plot leaked in April 2015 was labeled "lazy treatment for a treasured property". The director then verbally abused all critics on Twitter . In some cases, regardless of the content of the criticism expressed, misogyny and sexism were assumed. The first trailer received an exceptionally high number of negative ratings and critical comments on YouTube , which Sony quickly deleted. No other trailer in YouTube history received more dislikes. The trailer published on March 3, 2016 is thus one of the ten videos on YouTube with the most negative ratings. Criticisms included the lack of originality and poor implementation, as well as the outdated racist stereotypes of three white scientists and one black subway employee. However, Kate McKinnon's portrayal of the character Dr. Jillian Holtzmann. Melissa McCarthy found the reference to the events of 30 years ago "very confusing" as it suggested a continuation.

The filmmakers interpreted the ongoing disapproval as an aversion to women. Some saw it as a strategy to focus criticism on sexism debates in order to prevent the film from receiving bad reviews and flopping . Kevin Smith commented that the trailer would have been bad even with male ghost hunters. Despite online bashing , Sony's CEO was delighted with the national discussions.

The website Geek.com concluded, based on the previously published novel, that it was “a poorly developed script”.

The film received mixed responses.

The Rotten Tomatoes website counted a total of 383 reviews evaluated as 74% positive (“fresh”). In summary, it says: " Ghostbusters works in an impressive way as a stand-alone supernatural comedy with wonderful, relaxed actors - even if the film looks a little pale compared to the original." The audience rating the film with 50% as "rotten" (rotten ) a.

Vulture.com wondered how the script could even get the "green light". The Hollywood Reporter rated the film an "uncomfortable mess" and Vanity Fair a "flat, occasionally charming disappointment." IGN Entertainment was disturbed by the exaggerated homages to previous films. Even Spiegel Online was the "sometimes slavish proximity to Originalplot" as weakness. The row by row of ghosts shot proved for Steven Gätjen that the makers did not understand the original. The RTL II News found the fireworks display annoying because it looked so “deliberately funny”. A critical interview with Melissa McCarthy was finished by her and the distributor Sony did not authorize it to broadcast. Max Landis thought that while the movie looked like Ghostbusters , it felt more like tough girls . Hazel Brugger described the remake in an interview with Der Spiegel as a "shitty film".

Ghostbusters is one of the worst movies of the year for several reasons, including: Bad acting. Unimaginative in direction, editing, camera and music. Cheap special effects. An easy-to-forget bad guy. A terrible script. "

Ghostbusters (2016) is a weak parody of the original. It lacks the heart and character development for which the original characters have been loved by audiences for decades. The blame lies with the sluggish script and deliberately bad special effects that remind us of the source material without trying something fresh or new. "

- Jonathan W. Hickman : The Newnan Times-Herald

"Despite initial doubts, the feminization of the Ghostbusters is quite funny and successful."

- Editorial opinion : Cinema

“The new edition of the iconic horror comedy 'Ghostbusters - Die Geisterjäger' from 1984 is carried by a playful ensemble and convinces as an old-fashioned staging with puns and funny moments in the best sense of the word. In contrast, the action scenes do not build up any real tension. "

- Stefan Stiletto : Film service

“The remake of Ghostbusters doesn't leave a lasting impression - neither positive nor negative. Hardly anything worse can happen to a film. "

- Gregor Gruber : Futurezone

Gross profit

The film raised $ 46 million on the first weekend. So it started (adjusted for inflation) weaker than the last film from 1989. In the second week, the revenues plummeted. Worldwide, 228 million US dollars were grossed. The breakeven point is between $ 300 million and $ 500 million.

The suspected reasons for this box office result are the violent backlash in the social media , the increasing public resistance to sequels and remakes as well as the performance ban in China .

Sequels

In 2015, Sony announced plans for a “ Universe ”: a film about a different team, followed by a crossover and prequel film , as well as a TV series.

The next film was to be written by Drew Pearce and directed by the Russo brothers. Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum , among others, were planned for the mixed ghost hunter team . According to Channing Tatum, however, the project was postponed to await the success of the reboot (interview from June 2015). Anthony and Joe Russo were no longer available due to their commitment to Avengers: Infinity War . The project has been abandoned since July 2016.

Sony Pictures Animation had announced Ghostbusters: Ecto Force for early 2018 . The television series was scheduled to set in 2050 and feature several ghost hunter teams from around the world.

Variety announced on October 1, 2015 that Sony was working on a Ghostbusters animated film. The Hollywood Reporter announced Fletcher Moules as a director on March 8, 2016. The cinema release should be in 2019 or 2020. The series was then postponed.

The post-credit scene from Ghostbusters (2016) indicated a sequel with the mention of Zuul. There were ideas to combine the remake and the original film in a crossover through a parallel world . Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon had already signed up for two possible sequels. After the mediocre success of the remake, in contrast to the animated projects, these are considered unsafe. The crossover was published in 2017 as a comic entitled Ghostbusters 101 and was continued with "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call".

Ivan Reitman confirmed in November 2016 and March 2017 that more real-life films are in development. According to Dan Aykroyd, however, there will be no sequel to Paul Feig's film for economic reasons. Instead, they are working on the script for Ghostbusters III , which could reunite the three remaining Ghostbusters. The film was announced for summer 2020 on January 15, 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the cinema release of Ghostbusters: Legacy has been postponed to March 2021.

Then you have at least one or two more concepts for the Ghostbusters. Dan Aykroyd also wrote a script for a prequel : In the feature film or TV project Ghostbusters High , Venkman, Spengler and Stantz are said to meet for the first time in New Jersey in 1969 .
