Ghostbusters: The Video Game is a computer game released in 2009 for Windows , Playstation 3 , Xbox 360 , Nintendo DS , PlayStation Portable , PlayStation 2 and Wii . The plot is based on the movies Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II and comes from the main actors Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis , who go on ghost hunting with Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson in the game again. Also, William Atherton , Annie Potts , Brian Doyle Murray and Alyssa Milano have contributed their appearance and voice. Not from the films are Rick Moranis , who is largely retired, and Sigourney Weaver , whose acceptance came too late. According to Dan Aykroyd, the game is "essentially the third movie". The player takes on the role of a new ghost hunter cadet.

In 1991 the ghost hunters officially work for the city and train a new cadet. The first ghosts are caught at the fire station before the search for Slimer leads the ghost hunters to the Sedgewick Hotel . After a cross-dimensional shock wave hits New York City , the team must fight numerous ghosts, including the marshmallow man in Times Square . The trail then leads the ghost hunters to the New York Public Library , where they meet the librarian again as in the first film .
Later, Walter Peck , the guest curator, gives a reception at the American Museum of Natural History to mark the opening of the Gozer exhibition before they return to the Sedgewick Hotel.
The Ghostbusters find out that the architect Ivo Shandor created a mandala out of several buildings , the knots of which they must close. The path leads the ghost hunters to an island where Ivo Shandor has built a secret palace complex. In the finale, they meet Shandor in his exterminator form in the Central Park Cemetery.

Development costs were around $ 15 to 20 million, almost as much as the film budget at the time . The Windows, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions contain realistic graphics, while the Nintendo DS , PlayStation 2 and Wii have cartoon-like graphics.

The game was originally due to be released in the fall of 2008 and distributed by Sierra Entertainment . After the merger of Sierra's parent company Vivendi Games with Activision to form Activision Blizzard , the new company announced that it would no longer publish several Vivendi projects due to low profitability prospects, including Ghostbusters: The Video Game . Atari SA announced in November 2008 the 25th anniversary release of the original film in June 2009. In Europe, the game was initially only available on PlayStation 2 and Playstation 3 , as platform provider Sony had secured temporary exclusive rights to the game. The other versions followed later. In the USA , all versions were released on June 16, 2009, exactly 20 years after Ghostbusters II opened in theaters .
On October 4th, 2019, Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered was released for Xbox One , PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch . This corresponds to the game from 2009, but without the German-language synchronization and without the multiplayer mode.

In the first two and a half weeks 440,000 units were sold, after a month it was one million worldwide. In America, it was the most searched video game on Google in 2009. On May 5, 2010, the cut scenes were honored with a Canadian Videogame Award. In 2011, Atari released another game under the Ghostbusters license, Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime .
Trivia
The opening credits of the Remastered Edition from 2019 remember Harold Ramis , who died in 2014, five years after the original version of the game was released.
