William Atherton
William Atherton (born July 30, 1947 in Orange , Connecticut ) is an American actor .
Life
William Atherton studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse and Carnegie Mellon University . After a few years as a stage actor, he made his film debut in a small supporting role in Richard Fleischer's crime film Polizeirevier Los Angeles-Ost in 1972 . In 1974 Atherton was best known for a first lead role in the film Sugarland Express by Steven Spielberg . In 1975 he was seen in Die Hindenburg in the role of the aircraft fitter Karl Boerth, who wants to blow up the airship with the help of a bomb . In the same year he played a young stage painter in The Day of the Locust , a film adaptation of the novel by Nathanael West . In 1978 he was Jim Lloyd in the hit television miniseries Colorado Saga .
After seven years without a movie, Atherton returned to the screen in 1984 in the role of the unsympathetic EPA attorney Walter Peck in Ghostbusters . From then on he was usually entrusted with the representation of bureaucratic and hypothermic, sometimes rogue characters. One of his most famous roles is that of egocentric reporter Richard Thornburg in Die Hard (1988) and the sequel Die Hard 2 (1990). He also appeared in The Crow III - Deadly Redemption from 2000. His filmography includes numerous appearances in various television series, such as Monk , Desperate Housewives and The Twilight Zone . In addition to his film and television appearances, Atherton has also appeared many times on Broadway as a successful theater actor .
