Wennigloh has been a district of Arnsberg in the Sauerland ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) with 974 inhabitants since the municipal reform of 1975 .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document as Wenenclo in 1204, even if it is assumed that there had been a settlement here for a long time. In the 13th century the place was the seat of a free court. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the place was on a very important military road between Cologne and the area of ​​the central Ruhr with the Electorate of Cologne, Arnsberg. Despite this location, the place could never achieve commercial importance. Wennigloh therefore lived almost exclusively from agriculture, forestry and charcoal burning until well into the 20th century . In 1900 there were six full-time farms, plus a few smaller landowners. Even after the turn of the millennium, there are still three fully managed farms.

Other opportunities to earn a living were transporting wood , charcoal , stones and similar goods, especially to Arnsberg. The industrialization of the 19th and early 20th centuries in neighboring towns such as Müschede or Hüsten passed Wennigloh completely by. The residents participated in this development exclusively as seasonal or commuter workers.

This development is also reflected in the demographic development. At times, emigration and emigration was so high in the 19th century that the place had a negative population balance. One reason for the population increase after the Second World War was initially the acceptance of refugee families, some of whom remained in the area. With the automization of society, the opportunities for commuting also increased for the residents of the town, and emigration due to lack of work lost its importance.

On January 1, 1975 Wennigloh was incorporated into Arnsberg.

Club life
