Activision headquarters

Activision Publishing, Inc. is a publisher of computer games based in California's Santa Monica and is now a member company of the games publisher Activision Blizzard with offices in the UK, Canada, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, Scandinavia and the Netherlands. The first German branch was founded by Greg Fishbach in Hamburg in 1985 and is now located in Ismaning near Munich.

history

Activision was the first third party - and after Electronic Arts the second largest game manufacturer and publisher worldwide. Until the company was founded in 1979, video games were produced exclusively by the respective manufacturers of the game consoles . Some of the founding members were former Atari employees . David Crane , Larry Kaplan , Alan Miller and Bob Whitehead left Atari, among others, because their names were not mentioned in published games.

Initially, Activision produced exclusively for game consoles such as the Atari 2600. In the early 1980s, the product range was expanded to include computer games, as the sales figures for the consoles sank. The company bought a few smaller development studios, such as the text adventure producer Infocom in 1986 .

Sales in 2003 were approximately $ 864 million. In the same year, Activision took over a majority stake in Infinity Ward , known for the games of the " Call-of-Duty " series. Activision and Vivendi Games announced on December 2, 2007 that they would merge to form the new company Activision Blizzard. In May 2008, at the same time as Vivendi Games, the company ended its membership of the Entertainment Software Association , the umbrella organization for American game developers. Activision has since been a label of the parent company Activision Blizzard.
