Blur is in May 2010 for Windows , Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 posted arcade - racing game that from Bizarre Creations developed by Activision has been put on the market.
It combines licensed cars with fictional elements such as power-ups , objects that can be recorded during the race, which give the driver an advantage. The gameplay can therefore be compared to games from the Mario Kart series .
Gameplay
General
The game is a so-called arcade racer, a combination of a classic racing game with unrealistic, action-packed elements. The so-called power-ups are the central element of the game . These are special items that can be picked up by the vehicles in the race and offer various benefits to the driver. There are a total of eight different power-ups:
- Target-seeking missile
- Nitro boost
- Lightning volley
- Cleaner (circular thrust that damages vehicles in the immediate vicinity)
- Electric shock
- mine
- repair
- Protective shield
Racing modes
In circuit races , the driver competes against 9 to 19 drivers, the goal is to finish first. The above power-ups are available.
Duels are a form of circuit racing in which you only compete against one driver. Both drivers compete with the same car model, there is no free choice of vehicle. As with the circuit race, the goal is to be first, but there is a special feature that demolishing the opponent immediately leads to victory.
In the time trial , the player is alone on the track and has to pass a certain number of checkpoints before the time runs out. There are only two power-ups in this racing mode: The nitro boost and stopwatches, which increase the player's remaining time a little.
In races of destruction , the player takes on the role of a hunter whose job it is to shoot down vehicles that are driving in front of him. If an enemy vehicle is destroyed, it completes a power-up in reverse, either a lightning bolt, a mine or a missile. The only weapon available to the player is lightning.
Team races are available in multiplayer mode and are circuit races in which two teams compete against each other.
Single player
In career mode races are to be completed in the difficulty of ascending classes. You can win so-called "fans" through your driving style, with whom further cars can be unlocked. For the activation of races there are the so-called "flashing lights". In each race the player can win a maximum of seven lights. You get five of them for your placement, one you get when you have a certain number of fans and one you get for completing a "fan sprint". A fan sprint consists of a series of checkpoints that must be passed within a certain time. There are a total of nine "champions", each of whom controls a group of events. If you start to take part in a series of a champion, he presents four challenges (e.g. reaching a certain number of fans or lights or mastering spectacular driving maneuvers). If the player has completed all of the challenges of a champion, he can challenge him to a duel. The champions are much more difficult to defeat than the other AI opponents, as they have a comparatively short reaction time and increased aggressiveness. If the player wins, he receives his car and a modification. Modifications increase or combine the effect of power-ups.
Furthermore, various fictitious social networks are available in the career mode , with which you can find out about the races.
Multiplayer
Blur offers competitions that can be played on a console with up to 4 players via split screen or online with a maximum of 20 participants. The game modes range from pure races without powerups, through pure destruction events to powerup races. The players can create multiplayer modes themselves and distribute them in the game's own social network.
vehicles
Blur contains 40 different vehicles, which are divided into four classes (groups A – D). Some vehicles are available in several versions:

Rating by game magazines
Metacritic calculates an average value for the PC version of 86%, for the PS3 version 83% and for the Xbox 360 version 82% on the basis of several reviews. Critify, on the other hand, gives 84% each for the PS3 and Xbox 360 version. The multiplayer in the foreground at Blur was nominated in 2010 by InsideGamingDaily for the choice of the best multiplayer.
Sales figures
In the US, around 31,000 units of the game were sold in the first week. Sales figures for Europe are not known. Compared to the Split Second , which appeared almost at the same time, sales were significantly lower. The moderate sales figures were one reason for the closure of the responsible developer studio, Bizarre Creations, at the end of 2012. In retrospect, the main developer cites insufficient marketing as the reason for the low sales figures. Total sales as of August 17, 2013 were 1.16 million copies.
successor
On October 25, 2013, Blur: Overdrive was a successor for Android , and on November 1 of the same year it was released for iOS . Blur: Overdrive is a top-down arcade racing game that is similar to the gameplay of Blur. So are z. B. contain all eight power-ups from the predecessor. Developer Marmalade secured the rights to the Blur franchise from Activision for the game . A virtual joypad, a floating steering wheel and a slider are available for control on the touchscreens.
